DO METHANE EMITTING COWS CONTRIBUTE TO GLOBAL WARMING?

There is actually a school of thought that thinks that atmospheric CO2 is an indicator, not a cause, of climate change. During periods of increased solar activity, the oceans are warmed, releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere, much in the way that warm soda doesn't hold its CO2 as well as cold soda.

I've never heard that before, but it's a good one.

By the way dudes, vegetarians are responsible for methane pollution produced by cows. Look at all the cows in India that are just chillin' and NOT being eaten.

Oh yeah and cows have four rumens, not four stomachs.

Diggler, dude, you are scaring me here. You are not going to get
all serious in a \MM/ conspiracy thread, are you? :eyebrow:
:D

Of course not. It just popped in my mind and I forget to mention it in our weekly "Teh Global Warming!!11!!!" thread.

Back on subject; we need to take safety and efficiency into account... so we have to figure out how to rig up thermocouplers to the cows as well. That way if the pilot light goes out, the bung is sealed with some kind of secondary seal.

Let's get this working so we can get to work on my next incentive, Vacuum Cleaners for the Homeless.

BTW, IIRC, cattle emit methane mostly through burps, not farts. ;)

Tru dat, although I've heard there's a way to prevent that.

By the way, I'm assuming you know a little bit about organic chemistry. I've been meaning to ask someone this for ages:

What is the origin of all of these funny names? meth, eth, prop, but etc... what language is that? Who came up with alkane, alkene, alkyne, vinyl, benzyl etc.?

I used to know a little bit about organic chem, but that was years ago in school. Now I know even less, or at least have a lot less at immediate recall. I'll have to look that stuff up.

But I can recall this much:

methane = CH4

add an oxygen atom and you have an alcohol

methanol (methyl alcohol) = CH3OH.

Similarly, ethane = C2H6, and ethanol (ethyl alcohol) = C2H5OH.

It was in the paper today. Ford is bringing back the Taurus...
