Do Mike Lull basses actually sound that bright?

The wonderful thing about most boutique and custom builders is that they'll work with you to achieve the bass and tone you want. If you get to the point where you're ready to buy a Lull, you can tell them what tones you want from the bass and they can guide you to making the component selections that will achieve that. All P basses sound like P basses, but not all P basses sound the same.
 
If you watch some longer concert videos from Bryan Beller you'll likely see him switch between his main red 5 string Lull j bass and his sunburst PJ, and they have noticeably different tones despite playing them on the same rig at the same gig... the j is definitely bright, whereas the PJ has a much rounder/darker tone that he tends to describe as "chocolate-y."
He also has very dead roundwounds on that PJ and it’s passive. The M5 are naturally on the brighter side being a being an active J with a maple board, but a very good point indeed.
 
Disclaimer: my ultimate grail bass is (or was?) a Mike Lull P4. I love their look; the build quality seems to be outstanding, and everyone raves about Lull’s instruments.

Now…. The sound. Bear in mind I’ve yet to play one IRL to make my own mind up; but every video of Lull basses I’ve seen online have that very bright; almost metallic sound. There’s no warmth to it…





Is it the way it is recorded? Or do they actually sound that bright? There’s not that typical warm P sound…

And that’s not just the P models; same with the J ones.

I wonder if the use of aluminium (that’s how we spell it here :) ) bridges has an impact….

Please share your experience!

Brand new strings. I don't think the videos produced, how they are recorded, and the people chosen to play the instruments ALWAYS do the basses justice- even ones from the manufacturers, themselves. (See Fender, btw...) I wouldn't worry about those videos. There's no reason to believe these instruments can't easily deliver terrific Precision bass sounds, and warm sounds.
 
Sounds normal to me and I think I can still hear ~13 KHZ. New strings, higher end pickups that have less winding. They did not exactly tell what the signal chain is. My 2014 USA P-bass also sounds bright when fully open. My 1984 with EMG Geezer is the same if not brighter with roundwounds

Put a band with him and the cymbals and snares and guitars will make the bright sound fit just right.
 
YouTube demos can be deceiving. I remember years ago I almost didn't buy an EMG GZR because every YT video I could find it sounded terribly distorted. To my surprise not only did it not distort, it was actually not a very hot pickup all, but nice and smooth. A lot of it comes down to strings, pickup height, technique and EQ.

Pickups aren't magic, neither is a bass guitar. When you hear a lot of high end in a tone, that doesn't mean that there's some magical thing that adds high end, but rather that there's not a whole lot that sucks the high end away. The more cable and wire you introduce to a signal, the less high end you'll get, unless you introduce buffers and such.
The big difference between different models of pickups of the same type, is how much high end they'll give. Depending on the amount of windings, the magnet, and the gauge of the wire, you'll have a more or less top end roll off. BUT, and here comes the fun part, most of that difference becomes irrelevant if you have a lot of cable in your chain. The more capacitance you introduce through other means, the less the actual difference in pickups becomes. And I would argue it's pretty much irrelevant already once you plug into your amp...

This is roughly where you're at when you add a cable. The solid red and blue lines being wildly different pickups (one having a capacitance of 90pF and one has 140pF, while the cable adds 400pF, which would be around 5 meters of a good quality cable).
Pickups can only do so much, and as long as the strings are solidly attached to the bridge and tuners, you'll get a good range of motion and virutally no difference between instruments.

That taken into consideration, I don't think the bass is at fault for the audio sounding so bright. It's probably just the way they recorded it, potentially changing some stuff afterwards. Perhaps there is some preamp magic happening in that bass. But if you put the pickups close enough to the strings, and you roll off some of that top end, it'll sound plenty warm.
If the bass looks good, feels good, and works, then it is good!
I don't now where you got those curves, but a pickup that resonates at above 4 kHz is make a pretty bright instrument. 2kHz is about where P's live. 3 kHz is in the neighborhood where J's (both pickups full on) live. 4 kHz is BRIGHT.

A lot of people think they want a "full response" pickup. Nope - if you ever heard that, you'd go screaming for the exits. The strings on your basses are a lot more metallic sounding than you think - without some rolloff, the sound would be incredibly harsh. A P usually has about 25 dB of cut at 20 kHz. A flat response pickups would sound like a P with 25dB of treble boost at 10 kHz. That's nails on the chalkboard territory.

I'm thinking it's the strings. If this is a new instrument, the strings are going to be new as well. Plus - he had the tone knob dimed for the first part of that demo.

Typical bedroom tone/string setting to appeal to the young kid who thinks sparkle and brightness is it. In my world, it aint. But you see it a lot in demos...treble turned way up to get a ...scooped tone that goes nowhere on stage, but yep in the bedroom its sexy. Lull instruments are very good and with dead flats they kill.
 
I agree, the way Spencer demoes his basses does not make me want one. Though I actually do because of reviews from other sources (looking at you, IMA).

To be clear: I'm not talking about the quality of the basses, I know they're top notch. This is about the demo's.

For me a bass demo should show me how it functions as a bass. The tone in the Lull videos contain so much high end that it overpowers the fundamentals and mid definition, thus not giving me the confidence it would work in a band setting.

To be fair, a lot of bass demos leave me wanting. In most cases that's due to them not playing how I play. I'm a simple player, relatively soft touch, clean sounds. There's a few reviewers who demo like that at least some of the video. The rest I largely ignore.

This is where I have them from. You can use generated subtitles if you want.
They're mainly for demonstration purposes. And it's referring to guitar pickups. Same principles apply though. It's about the relation of capacitance and frequency

My Mv4 + TI Jazz Flats does not sound as bright / sterile as that video.
I'll admit the videos are very "bedroom tone" to my ears.
Not that I think it's a bad tone
Just that I would expect a lot of it to get eaten up by other things, onstage at a gig.

Not only can you not judge a basses tone best from a You Tube demo
You also can't judge the base's tone best in any solo situation
Plugged in at a gig is the surest situation to judge , I feel.

You need to play some in person for a few hours. I can drive down to their shop anytime and their instruments are really all that, but, if going to Bellevue's not practical, there's specialty bass shops in Phoenix, Florida, and another i can't remember that might have a few

edit, bass Central and the bass place don't have any, the shop in West Seattle has 4 but that probably doesn't help... you could call Lull's and ask where else you could try a few
