Do new basses inspire you?

So new basses will stimulate men more than they will women?:p

I think every new bass Ive bought has inspired me to play and progress as a bassist in different ways.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "every" bass. For example, I've picked up a couple of spare SX basses that were just more tools in the class of a new hacksaw at home depot.

But generally speaking I try not to buy a new bass unless there is something quite different about it. And usually that means it represents an area of my musical knowledge/skill that is lacking. So If all my basses are 4 strings, a new 5, 6, or 7 string bass represents lacking knowledge and skills and hence is an inspiration to learn, practice and experiment. When all my basses are fretted then fretless basses represent new lands to conquer and hence are inspiration. If I've been playing only "modern" basses and then get a new "old school" Fender. Same thing.

Sometimes it's not even the music or the playing as in the couple of Wishbasses I bought to do modding on.

The thing about music is you never know it all. And new stuff of whatever kind can be new lessons for you. And to me that causes inspiration.

If a new bass doesn't inspire, then it is 100% wasted money.

Yes, definitely. I play differently with different basses. A bass sounding different to another is enough to make me play differently, or if it feels different.

I don't play a Precision like an Ibanez, and I can say with fair certainty I would have different musical inspiration from a Vampyre Dark Lord than a Ritter

yup

Absolutely. When i got my 7 string it inspired me to tap more. When i got my 6 it inspired me to use more complex bass lines and work on my technique for picking. When i got my upright it inspired me to really learn music and again work on my technique as well as hone my ear for fretless playing.
