Do people buy basses with dings?

Hey guys,

Just a little bummed about what happened to my J24 the other day. After playing it, I went to put it back on its hercules stand. When suddenly, It slipped out of my hands and bounced of the padded floor (I share basement with my kids play area), landing on my son's Thomas the train set wood tunnel. Needless to say, it left a one inch gash in it. What sucks is that I was contemplating selling it, but now I'm not sure if anyone would want to buy it. New it was $700+, used I would have let it go for $500.

Now, I'm not to sure how much I would loose because of this. Any thoughts? Should I just suck it up and keep it? or do guys still buy a bass, regardless of any imperfections?

I'll post picture in a bit.

it's like a car...price depends on condition...

but, of course, people buy basses with dings...personally, I'd rather buy a bass with a beat-up body that plays and sounds great than a beauty that plays and sounds like snot.

80's kramer striker bass; this was basically given to me. Haven't decided what to do with it yet. Plays fine.

I bought a P-bass with a considerable amount of body damage. It still plays and sounds like a P-bass.

I would expect a mint condition instrument to fetch more money on the used market than a similar dinged up one, but I don't think it would stop many people from buying it if it was what they were after.

I once was boxing up a guitar body, was taking some final pics of it, picked it up and turned, and smacked it right into the edge of the kitchen counter. :( Had to knock some $$ off the price and contact the buyer to see if it was still ok.

When I buy used instruments, I expect them to be flaw-free, unless it's described. If I buy something with dings, etc - then I expect to pay less than the "regular used price". I also know when selling something with dings, that I will get less money.

I try to keep my instruments in excellent condition, but I'm aware things happen. Sometimes I like to play my instruments that I bought with dings more b/c I don't have to worry or be as careful when playing them. Another ding on a beater, no big deal. :D

I bought a "brand new" Jaco Fretless from a major retailer that had to be shipped from another store and when it arrived it had 2 noticeable dings. At first I was thinking of making them order another one and then I came to my senses... dings are not going to affect the sound... I did manage to get them to take some $$ off the price and throw in some other goodies to make me "feel better"..
