Pllllt. That's nothing. I just bought a Roscoe Beck V with a chip that big right on the front. Of course, those are a little harder to find.
Well, somebody's probably going to try to talk you down in price but... que sera sera.
'bout sums it up for me. A working instrument gets dinged. Its a rule of entrophy or thermodynamics, I forget.
Cygnus, I agree with the idea of trying to repair the damage to your bass - it could well get you a better price for it, IMO

I was recently wondering the same thing about one of my P Basses.
It's a Fender Custom Shop '61 P Bass, which was built as a "New Old Stock" (NOS) instrument. I wanted it because of the very rare colour (Lake Placid Blue) and paid about the going rate for it (used), despite the enormous bald patches, where it been stood on a rubber-coated stand and the paint had been "burnt" off
.
It's a fantastic P Bass (2nd best I've ever owned
), but I do wonder what other people's reaction would be if I tried to sell it for the same sort of price that I paid 
. There's really not much prospect of a "home repair", as metallic paint is very hard to match and the bass has a lot of dents around those bald patches, too 
.
I'm hoping that I'd find someone like me, who's just knocked out enough by the prospect of owning such a bass that they wouldn't really care
.
What do you folks think? Would you pay as much for this as you would for a CS '59 P Bass in better condition, but in a "standard" colour (assuming of course that you actually preferred a custom colour )?

Honestly, it doesnt look too bad.... But you know there are those anal individuals out there... Fortunatly, most of them play anal-boutique basses... ;-)
As was stated before. Just be upfront about the gash so the buyer doesn't feel like they were duped in any way.... I bought bike off of Craiglist recently. The add said that it was an 80 Cannodale which I was looking for. Even said the guy won the Hiawain Ironman on it. (Not that I cared... ;-\ ) After driving some considerable distance (almost 50 miles) to get it, I get to the guys house & the dang bike is on 2 flats!!! (Top if off, it had tubular rims/sew-up tires. Which start @ $35 & run upwards of $150 each) Looks like it needs a good wiping off... The paint had seen better days too!!! I was less than impressed when I saw it, but the price was still acceptable. I ended up getting $20 bucks off. I should went for more, but I was tire from the drive & excited about riding this ... If that guy was selling something else, I wouldnt buy from him.... If he had included pics giving me at least an idea of the overall condition, I wouldnt have had an issue, but it seems like he 'purposly' withheld vital info... (How can you test ride a bike w/2 flats?) The pics you just showed us are great. Use the same ones in your add & you shouldnt have a problem.
I'm not a "relic" dude, but my basses aren't museum pieces. They get played and dings happen. I do my best to keep them in great shape, although I'm well aware that stuff can happen.

. Well, I still don't know if the dings affect the value, but there's at least one person who's offered to steal it for nothing, so that's a promising start

But all seriousness, I'd buy a dinged up bass regardless of some paint chips. If it still sounds good, you could always re paint it.
Buying basses with dings is a great way to get a great bass for cheap. I got my Warwick Thumb (my dream bass) for roughly a grand.
Hopefully, I never will, but I've just bought another one (NOS, in Shoreline Gold)
so if I ever get stuck for cash it's gonna be a tough decision ... I'm definitley not giving you my address now .
I wouldn't balk at that ... it's on the back, and no big deal. If I bought it I'd swipe some nail polish from my daughter and carefully touch it up. I just bought a Tacoma Thunderchief acoustic a while back that has quite a bit of gig rash on the front. But it sounds and plays beautifully. And the price was right, even though I drove 220 miles round trip to get it. People WILL buy a dinged bass (if it's a desirable bass, of course).
That said, it's a tough sell these days, no matter what the condition.
That's a very solid school of thought by my reckoning.

kramer striker bass; this was basically given to me. Haven't decided what to do with it yet. Plays fine.
If you scrape the rest of the paint off, you could count the rings and see how old it is

Makes sense to have guitar stands or something similar for every bass you keep around, instead of keeping then next to the chair and so forth....
As I stated in my opening post. I was about to put my J24 on its stand. Any bass that I don't have a stand for goes straight into a hard shell case.
