Do singlecut basses look pretentious?

Who cares what it looks like or what someone else may think?

If it delivers the sound you're after, and plays the way you like it, it's all good.

I've taken the stage with some odd (for the genre of music) basses in my time. That occasionally got me a few snide chuckles and half-witty comments - until we started playing.

Nobody had anything to say about what I was playing after that.

This pretentious thing is always asked by the most insecure people.

Truth of the world. No one gives a damn.
I think there's an exception corollary: "There are a few who do care, and they're mostly jerks and <bleep>s."

But yeah. :)

They are becoming more popular, and more present on stages. The purpose of the long upper horn on a Fender is for strap balance. I understand that the single cut provides more neck stability for extended range, extended scale basses with higher neck tensions (?) We (including the ever grumpy old "I") will eventually get used to anything that serves some functional purpose. Or not.

Wait, what was the question again?

Exactly. If someone is forming an opinion on someone because of what bass they play... it says more about that person than you. why the hell would you even care about what they think? Just kick those garbage people to the side where they belong.

I assume you play 6 string bass; don't you think it would be pretentious (not to mention, silly looking :D) to show up at a blues gig with a 6 string bass, in the first place? o_O

You could be right. My main bass is the green 6 in my profile pic.

I would use the 6 for blues, because I like not having to jump around the neck so much. I think it'd be possible to find a sixer that would fit into a blues band...mostly if it was Fender style, like this:

tl;dr
Another single cut thread.
Single Cutaways - love the look / hate the look?

Interesting use of "pretentious" in the OP. It avoids the forum rule against "ugly" bass threads.

I don't own a single cut, but I've seen several that make me drool.

Edit - I like the shape of the ones in the photo of the pair in the OP. I do think that a coffee table top & finish makes a bass look more "pretentious" regardless of the body shape.

Is that the legendary Jaco Catstorius?
Nice one!

I just want to clarify that I wasn't aware of, and wasn't trying to circumvent, that rule.
Thanks for linking to another discussion, I'll give that a read.

Reading several other discussions has been helpful. Most are about Fender basses v. the world, but the same basic point remains the same.

To summarize: certain contexts expect a certain sound/image, and it's your choice whether you want to participate in that or not. No use getting butthurt when people judge you for what you like, because that's how humans work; neither shall you get butthurt when your own choices limit your opportunities. Thanks, everybody.

Your question seems legit and doesn't seem like a troll. I think someone else could've gone that route.

There are a few other threads on the topic. Search function will show them.

I think anything "unusual" will grab attention. If you aren't interested in that kind of attention then a single cut may not be the best choice to avoid people who listen with their eyes.
