Do singlecut basses look pretentious?

Can't stand them!! :D

Let's talk about singlecut basses.

I don't see the problem here.

If a guitarist showed up at a bluegrass gig with a pink Ibanez 7-string shred guitar he'd probably hear some grumbling

Pretentious? No.

Ive used an ESP 6er with a pointy headstock for classic country and jazz gigs.

Pretentiousness never comes to mind, but images of humpback whales certainly do

If you mean the big honkin' chunk of wood halfway up the neck kind ?

Pretentious? No. Like a portly woman? Yes.

like some kind of Chernobyl birth defect

They look like whales

The answer is yes.

gotta love this place! way too fun/funny! :roflmao:

(never owned one: would like to try one, given this thread: are any of them known to be lightweight?)

I know I don't get out much, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone play a singlecut bass in a live band situation. And now that I think about it, the only places I've ever seen them are on YouTube demonstrations and in advertisements. I knew a guy who owned an Elrick singlecut, but I don't think he ever took it out of his house. Does anyone have any videos of players actually using them in concert somewhere?

If you show up to a gig with a single cut you will be sent home 3 songs into your first set with no money and your girlfriend is going to leave you for a proper double cut playing bassist.

Perhaps, but it really depends on how many horrid dead spots that "proper double cut bassist" has on his "proper" neck. My take on single cut is that big "whale" piece of wood is the poor man's graphite neck stiffener. Looks? Well do you want a bass with all the notes or only some of them?

I will add to this. I think there is a problem and it is not the bass nor is it the owner, it is the person that sees it as pretentious that has a problem. If a person likes what they like, who cares what others think about it. A bass should not be a fashion accessory. It is an instrument of creativity that can look cool if desired. It is not like they sell them in the Coach handbag store.

This man NEVER gets sent home!
He gets repeated calls.
And a fat patcheck that could gag a horse.
