That was quite a ride. I was worried about the horse, thinking I was way too big for it, but they assured me he would be fine. Everyone else got a guide that rode on the back at the beginning. I was on my own. They don't use a proper bridal set, but one of rope and just one "rein" on the left. So you pull out to the left, it turns left, tap right or gently pull right, turn right, pull back it might stop. So were going up and he behaves very well, until... it gets very steep. 100's of intertwining paths and not much else but grass and a drop off to the left. Everyone's guide hops off and leads their horse. I figure too much weight. Nope. My guide-less horse heads straight to the ledge. Quite a view. Tap right, pull right, Yell "BAD HORSE." Guides laugh at me. That actually calmed me as I thought he's probably not the death horse getting ready to rid his rider off a cliff. That's all I can remember except being glad to get to the top. Then at the top, what an experience! Some go up the other side so they can swim in the creator. So, I'm standing there, minding my own biz, looking down at a small island, in a lake, in Mt. Taal, the worlds smallest active volcano, on Taal island, in lake Taal, on the island of Luzon, in the Pacific ocean, on a seemingly very strange planet, yes, minding my own biz when a couple of beautiful WW2 US fighters buzzed us, flew up over the crater and began dogfighting. I questioned the guides and it seems there is some sort of air museum around there, but I was unable to locate it. I did find a museum at a park that has static displays of some good stuff like a T-28 Trojan (radial engine, I worked side by side with these when they were active in the PAF on their bases in Cebu/Mactan and Palawan, early 80's).

That volcano is also the 2nd most active in the Philippines. When it erupts anyone who doesn't leave the island, leaves in a box if they find them. Lake Taal is filled with volcanic polution, which makes it thrive to the point where it's probably the best public fresh water fishing in the Philippines, full of Talapia.

The city police have a cavalry division, the horses are equipped with full riot gear. This includes leg, chest, and hind quarter protectors, plexiglass face shields, metal nose protectors, etc. They are pretty imposing and effective in dealing with protesters. These equine officers are very well trained, they don't even flinch when they are confronted, they never back down.

Other horses serve patrolling large parks. Imagine having a job that requires that you ride a horse and do public relations all day and have all the benefits of being a government worker. The horses love meeting people. They even make a bit of a fuss, shaking their heads and calling people over when you ignore them.

Some horses have a personality that makes them especially good at squishing stupid people!

I saw them recently mustering for the St. Patricks parade. The horses are big, the cops are big, and with all their equipment on they can be scary. The horses were mounted and standing side by side, an imposing wall..

What struck me is that they were focused, standing at attention, they weren't moving at all. The people around them didn't pose a distraction.

As an aside, my grandfather was a calvary soilder in eastern europe in the late 1800's. He was small in stature so they assigned him to be a messenger. You've heard the expression, don't kill the messenger. Well, in war the messengers were targeted because they carried vital information. He used to recount where he was being chased and came to a revene. His horse jumped it, nobody else who was following made it over. That horse saved his life many times over.

I watched a Templar documentary the claimed their horses were well trained to fight to the death. If you killed a Templar, you had to face his equally feared and dangerous horse!

Other cities have mounted divisions as well. I was once told that the NYPD has fifty five horses and the unit dates back to 1858. You see them around Manhattan.

Canada has the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I saw a show last summer that they call the musical ride. It was pretty spectacular: The Musical Ride | Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

I think dont kill the messenger actually dates back to early message encryption. Maybe the Romans. They would grab an expendable, a peasant or something. Make him memorize the secret message and send him on his way. If he failed to deliver the message or leaked it they killed his family. If he delivered it they killed him to erase the secure message. Hate to think how they did data backup!

I provided PA to a couple of their US tour stops about 12 years ago, typically about 2-3 weeks each stop. It was an enjoyable gig, everything with military precision all the way down to the drinking.

In science, everything was in metric long before there was any talk of moving from imperial to metric for everything else. The bolts on my Chevy are all metric. Engineering uses metric, ohms and amp unit expressions are metric based, it makes a lot of sense.

Temperature conversion seems to be what messes the most with people's heads.
