The owners manual is right. Your spanner on a 12V battery goes up with a bang because there is zero resistance. Current flow is what does the damage and that is limited by the resistance in the circuit. Your DI will have a resistance that should be shown in the specs.Owner's manual is wrong. 40 volts on a piddling instrument cable is bad news. You never dropped a spanner on a 12v battery?
And don't joke about hanging a DI off a pedal cable. Like you want to see your amp go up in smoke?

In this case it won't make a ton of difference what cable you use. The main reason for using an instrument cable would be for noise shielding. In this case the signal level is exceptionally high when compared to the level electrical noise that the cable might pick up. The main reason for using a speaker cable would be for current capacity. The resistance of the DI will guarantee that there isn't much current in the circuit. I would suggest that you don't hang the DI off the back of your cabinet with a jumper cable but only because that is pretty hard on the cable and connectors. It's always bad to lose your signal mid show because your cable is busted.
