The sig models I've owned are Lee, Flea, and Waters. I bought those based on the player. I only have the Waters, but that's because I wanted a P. They all turned out to be very good basses for me.

No...my first bass was a Rickenbacker 4001 but I was 15 and had no idea who Geddy Lee or Chris Squire were for another year or two...
After that I had a Spector NS-2 prior to them becoming SUPER popular...then a pre-Gibson Tobias and a Lakland 55-94
I'm not sure if ANY of the players that I would list as influential in my playing have played any of the latter basses...
Most of my influences were Fender P or J players and I've never owned one...

No, but then again I've never had the money to haha.
Currently I'm saving up (over the next ten years
) for a pedulla like Doug Johns plays. However i have liked the look of pedulla specs for a while, its just that Doug sold me on them cause he gets the sound that I want. Period. More so i found him demo-ing the bass I like from them, the MVP, and loved what I heard. He sold me on it, I didn't start looking at it because of him.
I have explored pickups due to artists though. The guy from perpetual groove drew me to MM pickups, but I never bought a musicman. I love them but I didnt force getting one when it wasnt right. Never found a MM that was the right price and the right specs (5 string, cream color). i did however get a Modulus flea bass that is basically a MM with a graphite neck. Was totally sold on it. BTW anyone who knocks modulus needs to try one. Yeah theyre sterile at times but as long as its not your only bass id recommend it.

Yes and no... I took lessons through a Fender dealer... I thought of everything else as just knock offs, still kind of do even though I love many other brands now, I still consider myself a Fender guy.
I read the Fender Frontline catalog every year, so I would see artists I loved and ones I didn't know that I would grow to love. I had no idea who Jaco was until Fender told me he was the greatest bass player ever. I still want a Jaco fretless too this day, and will probably get one eventually.

I wanted a Gibson EB-3 from the time I saw the cover of Live Cream I thought it was the coolest bass and I just loved the SG/EB shape when I was a Gutiar player years ago I got a SG and hated it and went back to a Fender Strat then when I trade my Strat for a P-Bass in the back of mind I still wanted a Gibson until I got a E-4L and hated the shape .
I see mostly self-professed independent thinkers (and buyers) here, but I confess I wanted the Hofner Ignition because of all the posts I read about its potential to emulate the early Beatles sound. The other two reasons were its similarity to a violin and the small scale. After 31 years with my Ovation Magnum (bought for no other reason than than I liked its sound and sustain), I wanted to try playing with a smaller instrument. I've had the Hofner now for 3 days and I have to say it's a lot of fun.
I'd love to be able to afford some of the instruments that my idols play, but I don't have that kind of disposable income and probably never will. I could never justify spending 4 house payments on an instrument unless I earned that money by playing what I have now, also not probable.
It's ok though, I'm happy buying and swapping mid level basses, keeps things interesting.
