Do you consider Led Zeppelin a METAL band?

That falls under the heading of "shelving." Where and on what shelves in the record store do you put somebody's records in order to get people to buy them.

I prefer not to be herded into to some corral where a suit "suggests" and "similar bands" and hands me lists of "what others who looked at _____ are buying"

Let's "Tear down the wall:"

I prefer to have the music that I like all in one place.
I don't want to go "hunting high and low"to find bands of a similar style or mind set.

Metal? No way. Not even back in the day. Just good old rock and roll, or hard rock if you prefer, and the latter term only applies to a small portion of their catalog in my opinion.

What I think is funny is how some people are using the "one song" argument.

Oh, this band can't be considered heavy metal because they played this song (example song is definitely not heavy metal). Thus determining that a band cannot be heavy metal unless ALL of their songs can be considered heavy metal.

The"one kind of music"I was referring to is any kind of music that is highly complex and difficult to play.
It can be wild or quite mild.
That USED to apply to only Jazz/Rock Fusion.
But it's branched out to others that have those same qualities.

Saying Led Zeppelin isn't metal is tantamount to saying Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the telephone is irrelevant because Apple and Samsung don't have wires attached to them and a wall. Not saying Led Zeppelin invented metal but they're the REAL pioneers of the genre. Respect to the pioneers, grasshopper.

I really and respectfully have to disagree, when Led Zep first appeared they were mainly out of the blues strained through England's vision of American bluesmen. In the day we NEVER referred to them as heavy metal, they were 'Led Zeppelin'. I honestly think they were not even pioneers of the genre (heavy metal), true, they could rock out. I would put the linage on Steppenwolf, Deep Purple etc eventually Sabbath who really nailed it down. I do not, will not argue and no snark intended. It does make for a great discussion, this is the view of someone who was 16 or so when Zep hit. One of the first 'genres' I can remember was when no one could classify the Eagles (Burritos, Parsons etc) and it was designated as 'country-rock'. Silly people. Trix are for kids. Hell, I remember buying a Led Zeppelin record and a Micheal Nesmith and the First National Band record on the same day. PTOO on genre. Dig the MUSIC.

No way LZ is HM.

My first car was a 1962 Mercury Comet. I was in high school and had a job. I bought that POS Comet from a neighbor lady whose husband had passed away. I think I paid her $200 cash. The Comet was beige. An ugly drab beige Comet with a 2-speed automatic and probably about 50 HP. It was his daily driver to his job at the naval shipyard in Long Beach. He probably died of mesothelioma from asbestos exposure. The Comet wouldn't run whenever it was foggy.

But I digress.

Anyway I installed an 8-track tape player in the Comet. The first tape I got was Led Zeppelin (first album). Oh holy heck, that LZ album rocked the Comet! I remember this very clearly.

Jimmy Page already had an enormous Resume' of working the old CHESS Recording Studio in CHICAGO long before LED ZEP! Also, Jimmy Page BOUGHT the rights to many OLD American BLUES songs from the CHESS Catalog! HE OWNED the RIGHTS to a few of the BLUES songs recorded on the 1st Led ZEP Album!! He was one SMART BUSINESS MAN as well as a Guitarist!!
