Do you ever feel self-conscious about your gear?

It took me a long time to really understand and accept this great truth:

What others think of you (your possessions, your actions, your opinions, your choice of friends, etc., etc.) is none of your business.

Definitely not. Whether I'm playing a 300 dollar bass or a Rick I will never be self conscious. I've played a Steinberger for a while and I've seen people laugh for some reason, but obviously that's before I destroy a set with it

If anyone else has a problem with the price of your bass, relax. It's not your problem. It's theirs.

Think about that for a second. Why are you worrying about a problem you cannot possibly have?

I've got band rehearsal today with a new band that I've pulled together. The drummer is also a bassist, and in fact he's a better/more experienced bassist than I am. However, he's not gear obsessed like I am. I'm feeling a little embarrassed about bringing my MIA Fender, because it probably cost more than all of his bass gear combined, and it'd probably be better in his hands lol.
To make things worse, the rehearsal is at his uncle's house, and his uncle is the very very frugal father (musician) of my SO. I'm not really trying to make an ostentatious display, but I feel like I would be if I'm bringing a $1k instrument.

I haven't decided what to do yet (feel free to give input lol). But either way, I wanted to ask TB, do you ever feel self-conscious about your gear? (whether too cheap or too expensive) Post your story!

Not necessarily. I picked mine for the sound, looks, and playability of it. You'd be surprised how many musicians never even heard of Spector ... which I only talk about when someone asks.

If they can't handle that tell them it's a SpectER by FendER.

I only feel bad about my gear when I bring one of the Squiers to a gig and it empties the place out with it's cheap sound and appearance.

I bought my mim p because my squier p special and schecter c4xxx were embarassing at "higher class" gigs i was starting to get. No one else cared, but i did.

Its still my #1 4 banger and i really made a good choice, but it was for the wrong reasons.

How full is this place, in Saskatchewan, in the first place? Maybe you are being overly critical of the poor Squier.
