Do you ever just sell off everything?

Yes. I've done it a couple times and almost done it a couple more. Factors were/are frustration and no prospect in the future. Of course, both those things are temporary but still, I am quick tempered and do things hastily at times.

...I just want to find one great bass, unlikely:rolleyes:

May be unlikely, but when you do find the "one" you will know it. It took me finding the "one" to realize all the years of bass GAS were actually a search, not some obscure, incurable illness.

I bought a US jazz plus back in the early 90's and have been happy with it to this day. I've bought a few MIM j's since then to use for all weather work, but only because I didn't want to risk the "one" by using it in extreme outside weather if I didn't have to.

Some may argue that if I'm needing something to avoid risking my unnatural obsession it can't truly be the "one". To that I'd say this...once you have the "one" in hand, minor details no longer matter and any additions are made for a valid reason with no emotional turmoil attached.

Once the "one" is in your possession, additional bass buying becomes more shopping for a useful tool rather than a quest for the ideal instrument, a much simpler more uncomplicated task to be sure.

I have been passively doing this for the past few months. But today or tomorrow i will be listing tons of my stuff and just keeping my main "gigging" gear.

I love my basses and amps but i cant justify them sitting around or just getting used for fun and practicing, especially when that tied up money can be used for upgrades on the house and putting into savings. I let gas take over my life for a period. Damn talkbass. :p

I've done it too many times, I regret each one, I had a Spector that played so well, I let it go to pay off bills, which in hindsight was stupid. I have gear laying around, that frankly, I will never use, I do regret so many sales...uggh, bad memories. :-(

I have done this as well. The first time was when I became a father and just jettisoned almost every piece of music gear I had. And I had a lot.

But it actually felt good, you know?

Since then I try to keep things minimal anyway. Don't want or need a lot of "stuff."

As far as basses go, I never intend to own more than 2 or 3 maximum ever again.

I don't buy the idea that you have to have a different bass for every different song you might play. Some people really do have a need for multiple string basses, fretlesses, etc. But I don't.

I also think there are all kinds of ways to vary your overall sound that don't include actually having a different bass for each application.

I've been tempted, but always just put everything away and waited a month before following through... each time I've been *SO* glad that I waited. For me, the better way to evaluate something is to ask myself, "If I didn't have this, would I buy it again tomorrow?" If the answer is no, out the door it goes :)

I went through this several years ago, mainly because I was searching for a sound and my gear just wasn't giving it to me. After getting the amp I had worked towards over a decade ago, the only other amp purchases I have made since was a backup head to use while my main head was in the shop, and a smaller combo for rehearsals and gigs that didn't require a six-foot tall monster. The backup head and combo have both been sold...

As for basses, when I finally got my SR, I quit even looking at other basses for ages. I already had my Tobias fretless, so the pair relieved me of all G.A.S until the desire for another Pecision set in. I carefully waited until I got one exactly like I wanted, because I didn't want another string of basses to pass through my hands because I was impatient and bought one in the wrong color, wrong neck shape, ect.
