No way that hair color is all natural at their age.
I have 10 basses. Out of all of them 2 are black and the other 8 are wood grain of some kind
2 Walnut/Maple Ibanez
1 Walnut/Maple Ric
1 Bubinga/Maple Ibanez
1 Swamp Ash Gibson EB2017 trans sunburst
1 trans ash Cort with a dark walnut stain
1 Mahogany/Ibanez with a maple top trans blue
1 Ray 4 Sterling trans with vintage sunburst
So yeah I kinda like to see the wood
But the grain has to be matching well for me to like it though

See, I think a black pick guard would do wonders for that thing. But, my NTF is beautiful. Tort and all baby!

Anything that looks like it could double as a coffee table or a front door is unappealing to me. I prefer a solid color or a burst of some sort.

Natural finish basses? Nah can’t stand them lol
Depends on the wood, as so many already stated, usually I would say no, though I still prefer black basses.

It's a musical instrument made of wood. IMO musical instruments made of wood should have a clear or trans finish. I've done many an opaque finish on bodies, but only because they had a veneer or were plywood.
Paint can disguise a body made of 3, 4, 5 or more pieces of wood to save cost (making sure here to point out the difference between that and an Alembic, which can be made of many more pieces of wood). If I have a nice two-piece body, I want to see the end grain when I look at the bass.
I don't own a T-40 yet but, when I do it will be one like this
I don't find naturals ugly, but I do find them a little hippy or kind of fancy. Every natural instrument I own is because they were all that was available at the time, and in my budget.
My first real guitar was this 78 Strat I got in 1980. It was one of two Strats and two Teles at the store. All were used, but this was the best priced Strat, so it was my only choice as I was sold on the Strat. The ash grain pattern is pretty darn good looking, though.
My first bass was an Electra/Westone X630B in natural (sen) ash. It wasn't ugly, but it wasn't much to look at, either. Ash with pretty flat grain, poorly matched body and a maple neck, blah. It was just like this one. It was my only choice for a decent bass for less than $200 in the mid 80s at the store I worked at. The couple Hondo basses there were horrible. Sold this as soon as I could upgrade.
My next natural was my 72 Jazz. It's a little more of a looker with the rosewood, pearl blocks and black guard. This was the cheapest, oldest J I could find scouring the dealer pages of Vintage Guitar magazine in the early 90s. I put the Badass, Barts, JRetro, hidden drop tuner and black guard on it as it looks better than white to me. This was my "hippy" bass in the early 90s, even had a macrame strap for it to be more ironic about it. This one has grown on me, I'll never sell it nor refinish it.
Then came the Carvin BB75 in koa and ebony. More exotic looking, for sure. Got this used for a song and loved how it felt. If I were to order one new, it would have been green or black. This one has also grown on me.
Lastly, this Lakland 55-01D came about as a Craigslist score. I was looking for an active, 5 string fretless with wide spacing. At $400, it's sound and playability were so good, I couldn't pass it up. If I was going new, it would be a black 55-02, but this is such a well done bass, I can deal with the somewhat overbearing new jazz/woodiness of it.

Bring out the best of what nature has on her palette. This is my first full build and it is almost done.
I love the natural wood finish. Ordered my last two new basses with tung oil finishes just for that reason.

That's exactly the model I would like to have, natural finish "70s" Squier VM Jazz Bass with black pickguard, maple neck and those rectangle inlays. But these are quite rare on local used market.
