Do you have a perfect bass?

The only two bass brands that I didn’t modify were:

Fodera

Not one of my few new basses were perfect for me right from the factory because they came with round wound strings. I only used flats and now nylon tapes. As soon as I changed strings they all got better.

Other than that the closest to perfect for me when new was my Hofner Ignition Club bass.

Perfect as in really perfect...no such thing exists.

The perfect bass for me is one that makes me feel good every time I pick it up. I have owned several of those, and both my current basses fall into that category.

I also have an EB0 and I wouldn’t change it either. Or my Allen Woody for that matter. The only mod I’ve ever made is swapping out the stock MIM pups on my J for Duncan Vintage 62 pups.

My short scale Alien Audio 5-string PJ is the first true GAS killer I've owned. It ends the need for any further fretted because it does everything perfectly and feels like an old sweater. Now my eyes only rove for fretless basses, but I found one with similar specs to the AA for under 1000 and will have that next week. If I like that as much as the AA, GAS is officially over ... until I start getting into pedals again, which always seems to happen once I'm satisfied with my basses. Hmmm.

A perfect bass.

One you would never consider changing. One that came just right straight from the factory.

Out of the 5 Basses I own, 4 have had pickup changes. While all were successful and delivered what I wanted. One bass stood alone. Perfect in every way and will not be changed in any way.

The Basses that were changed were 3 Jazz Basses and one precision bass. The Jazz Basses because of the hum. And I’m happy to say that the hum is gone. But crazy good tone is there.

The Precision was also changed because of a clank sound that I traced to the pickups. Switching fixed this issue.

Now oddly enough my last Precision has identical pickups as the one that was upgraded. I’m fact it’s even the same model and year. So other than the finish both Basses were identical. Except for one thing. One has a maple fret board while the other has a rosewood. The maple fret board unit had the clank. Fortunately the pickup change as fixed this problem.

So.

Five Basses. Four upgraded. One stands alone. Perfect right out of the box.

Anybody else have a bass that you wouldn’t change a thing on?

Removing the pickup cover on a 4003 does not count as a mod.

My 2013 Fender custom shop ‘51 P and late 90s G&L ASAT fretless are bone stock. My Ric 4003 got a Hipshot bridge and I ditched the chrome treble pickup surround for a Pickguardian flat plastic plate. My ‘70 EB-3 got a Hipshot super tone bridge to replace the stock bridge that crumbled. My Vintera P and 2000 American Series P both got gotoh resolites, lollar pickups and different Pickguards. I consider them all to be perfect now!
