Do you have a website that isn't MySpace? Where is it hosted?

I think it's worthwhile having your own domain.

I think that what you are saying about myspace here is a bit short-sighted though. Myspace is really what you make of it. I doubt there are many successful bands out there that don't have a myspace site these days.

I would bet that myspace generates more interest for any given band than their independent domain site does, too. Domain sites, to me, are for when you have merchandise and corporate interests to pursue and for when you want to host specific content.

I would recommend though that you just do some browser searching of bands you like and see what their websites are like.

If looking proffesional is what you are going for, I would suggest proffesional photos of your band. Like you guys playing, and individual pics. I think having good photos on an myspace page will make it look pretty proffesional.

Sounds like a good idea. A guy I work is in a band with two websites - MySpace and their own "bandname.com". He says the MySpace page gets a lot more hits.

I don't have a band website, but I do have a couple websites off of Invalid Link Removed.

Most other sites mentioned so far run off PHP/PERL/CGI, but DiscountASP is run off the .Net platform. Not saying one's better than the other, but if .Net is more your comfort zone, you should look into DiscountASP. I've had years of good experience with them.

And for those of you in Europe, they have a datacentre in US and in Europe, and you can choose where you want to be hosted. This gives better responsiveness for your fans if you are based on that side of the world... Many (most?) others are US based.

Nothing beats a high friend count on Facebook..

I personally know many major label acts that only use Myspace.

you can point a url directly to facebook.. then use the reverbnation crapplets to get your songs on there.

I can't tell you the number of bands that have a shabby logo and ghetto pix .. with a stellar website.

Start with the booking agent and work backwards.

A well done band web site is essentially today's press kit/onesheet, and no serious band should skimp on it.

My band has:
a bandname.com
a face book page
a myspace page

all of them are interconnected to one degree or another:
you can "facebook like" a new photo from our latest gig at our bandname.com
or link it to your twitter page ect...

our drummer is web guy by day and builds/tweaks our bandname.com using wordpress.. His own ISP is our host, I believe.

I feel that for online presence, nothing screams "amateur" less than having a fully functional pro website at your bandname.com, nicely laid out , with photos, dates, music, contact info etc...

I'd avoid any web service that inserts their own domain into your URL: freeamateurbandhost.com\myband ...etc

It's a lot of investment, but it shows a level of dedication to prospective bookers similar to having decent merchandise, plenty of recordings, or a being signed to a label. All of these things hint at the effort a band puts into their draw, which is what bookers care about.

I use mediatemple. I pay a lot ($40 a month) for a dedicated virtual with 10+ domains running wordpress. I have shell access and 512M of dedicated ram. The site runs PHP very nicely. Wordpress makes it simple to run a band site.
