I used to play a "Stradivarius" bass as well as a "Stradivarius" trombone. All those violins he made were just to support his real passion, trombones.

Seriously though, those instruments weren't fraudulent, they just had silly model names.
When I was in middle school orchestra, one of my friends had an el-cheapo violin with that 'orible orange varnish and the label "Stradivarius". We called it the "Stradivarius Oklahomus".

Um, I don't think so. The trombones were just the bread-winner instruments. His real love was for ophicleides, which is how he captured the aristocracy/royalty market.
