Unless the original bassline is the essential part of the song that the average listener recognizes, I just play my own bass lines.
On the topic of over playing, it's only over playing if it takes away from the song. Then again when I do play covers it's Allman Brothers type stuff with massive room to stretch out and improvise jazz/blues style.

if its a new cover, no i try to play it as close as i can
