If you must do it use a Squier, same headstock shape as a Fender.

I love my NYC Sadowsky. It's no better than my Fenders from three different post-CBS decades. Just different. If it meant not being judged by what I play I'd gladly obscure the decal, but the fact is that virtually no one other than members of this site have heard of the brand and even fewer people care.
The few who did care whether I played a Fender or not, I was more than happy to oblige. If someone has a look or sound in mind and they're paying me to play, I respect and welcome the attention to detail.
Be aware that some old jazzers still refer to "electric bass" and "Fender bass" interchangeably. Like Kleenex and tissue.
I currently play a 'Fender'ish custom parts Jazz bass. Looks like a Fender. Has a full EMG compliment. So it doesn't quite sound like a Fender.
Even as a bass player I could care less what someone uses. It's like hiring a carpenter and firing them because they use dewalt but you want then to use Milwaukee.
One sad thing I notice is some people don't learn to make their tone they just buy a new bass. A bass is just a tool it doesn't make the bass player. I have a fretless j bass but use an Ibanez as my primary. I like having a three band eq on my bass I change my tone accordingly and that could be mid song. Personally I like the feel of it I like fender too but I can get more tones from my ibanez. Some people like the brand others hate it it's all opinion.
OP the people who replied to your CL add asking if you use fender can be found in the bass gig and humor section CL adds Dumberer and Dumberest.

Or you could ask them "Do you mean a G&L, Ernie Ball or Fender?" Because technically, they're all "a Fender".
I was briefly in a band a few years ago that said "You really need to go buy a Fender." I play a Ric and this was coming from a band that didn't have the drive or ambition to play anything other then free punk shows at, what is essentially, the West Coast CBGB's. Those shows are lots of fun to play, but I am not buying a new bass for them. Plus, I think I have the world's smallest hands (seriously, I buy my gloves in the kid department) and a P Bass feels like I'm holding a Louisville Slugger. I'll play one if a certain sound is needed for a recording, otherwise I will stick to the Ric.
