Do you split tips?

The couple gave the $$ to the singer for a reason.
If a bass geek asks you to play Portrait Of Tracy, you play it and he hands you some money, then you can keep it.
If you don't have a tip jar, just let it go.

No Way. I could dominate the band if that were the case. Just by singing songs :bassist: that the crowd would want to hear.
Then I'd get all the tips. :ninja: and the band would be :crying: and I'd be out of a job.:help:
No Way.

Tips get split evenly. We usually use them to tip the servers and boot the drummer some extra gas money since he's the guy that tows the trailer to gigs, and usually keep some around for miscellaneous cables and stuff that tend to die or get left at gigs, but ultimately, if they go directly in anyone's pocket it's an even split or nothing.

That is bush league behavior, IMO. Weak.

I have a couple of steady gigs each week, mostly jazz/blues/standards kind of stuff, a 3 piece and a duo. We regularly pull in $100-$150 in tips, mostly cause of the bluehair crowd that follows the BL. We ALWAYS split the tips evenly, no questions asked. Even if you're not used to significant tip amounts, IMO/IME it's a good idea to make the policy well known. Maybe 4 bucks isn't a reason to get upset about, but if you don't have a clear understanding, you're asking for trouble if the tip jar suddenly gets full.

YMMV.

Tips? People give tips to the band? I never got a tip in my life. Come to think of it our keyboard player handles all the financial negociations and I've be getting the same pay since 1998. Surely it should have gone up since then? And does every gig pay the same? I always get the same. This has started me thinking. I'm going to have words with that mother. Thanks.
