If I was teaching a beginner how to hold a bass in a good playing position I'd tell him to put the neck plate (or the neck/body junction) right over his belly button, and raise the neck up about 30 to 40 degrees. This way both wrists are straight, and he'll never have wrist problems. Look at pictures of the great bass players, and you'll see that they hold their bass the same way. It's how I hold my bass, and I've never even had a whiff of a wrist issue.
