Did Epi switch to 5 ply tops from 3 ply by 1954? I'm wondering if the tripod aluminium bridge on the subject bass of this thread has that to remedy a caving top.

As far as I know and based on my collection of Epi’s five ply top is consistent. I own Epiphone #103 (which is the third bass made, they started numbering at #100) and it is a thick five ply top. Early Kay’s had three ply tops but later went to five ply and then a thicker five ply in the 1950’s. Kay’s and Epi’s are both American made plywood basses but are apple and oranges in comparison. While I love my Kay basses, I am passionate about Epiphone’s.

I didn't get this bass, and never got the serial, sorry! I had an offer that the store was supposed to call me back about, but they dropped the ball and the bass sold the next day. They said it was out the door five minutes before I came in to get it. To me the top and back looked great.

That one in Vancouver is sweet. Love the grain and arch top. I think these Epi blondes are so rad looking. They don't look like p.o.s. school instruments.
