I always use it, mainly for sustain. The other night I used an SVT sim + compression plus bass boost and had slowly blooming sustained notes that were sick. Band members raved about the huge tone.

Rarely, except for smashed tones.
I tend to push the gain a fair amount on the amp which gives me a bit of compression.
As for DI, I leave it clear.
