I just ordered a used hand stained American standard p bass. 150 were made in that color, of which 50 were signed. I'm not sure if I'm hoping it's one of the 50 or not.

If I could choose where the autograph would be, and depending on who it is, yes, I'd be fine with an autograph.

IMHO anyone who pays more money for a bass than it is worth and thinks that it is worth more simply because it has the signature of a recognized player on it should absolutely pay more than it is worth.
If that is as close to being cool that the buyer can be, then it should cost them something extra. And it is probably worth it to them.
After all, it is easier to buy proximity to being good than to do the work it takes to be good.

The builder or the artist of the signature model isn't a problem.
Hell, it some circumstances it may add to the resell value. Imagine a Tobias from the days when Michael Tobias actually made them. Or a Pedulla?
Can you image having Fender that was signed by Leo at the time of the build?
Roger Sadowsky does it on request. I was bummed that he happened to be out of town when my second bass was ready to ship.

I had Roger Sadowsky sign the back of headstock on one of his basses I bought directly from his NYC shop. I think it's kinda cool. To each his/her own.

Only ever bought one bass because of the autographs. Signed by the players who made the music I grew up listening to, and who then made a movie about their iconic careers, years later. Unfortunately, "Pistol" Allen had already passed. It's a fun conversation piece with some sentimental value for me and a few of my cohorts, as corny as that may seem. (it's also a darn nice MIJ P bass)

I doubt the topic constitutes that big an existential crisis for most people around here. But you never know.

Does the autograph increase the value? I have seen many MIM Strats autographed by Alice Cooper here in Phoenix. In Phoenix a silent auction isn't worth "it's salt" unless you have a autographed Alice Cooper Strat and a basketball signed by Charles Barkley.

I really like that mine are signed by Michael Tobias, and my newest signed by Michael and Daniel Tobias.
I thought it was cool that the hangtag on my Mesa WD-800, that is black, had the initials and signature of
