does a fender molded hardshell case fit either a j or a p?

i searched for previous threads, but some said yes and others said no. does anyone know if the regular fender standard (not the ones for deluxe models) molded cases fit either a jazz or precision bass or are they "molded" to fit one or the other? thanks.

Well, if they're Molded, then they won't fit both>

The Precision and jazz both have VERY distinct body shapes.

The plastic exterior is molded. It's the same with a Strat/Tele case.

I don't think so - my P case is pretty much an exact fit for my bass. Not sure how a J could possibly fit!

According to the guy at Guitar Center that sold me the case, they only make one molded case and a P or a J will fit. The P fits better, the J fits poorly. It's hard foam on the inside which conforms to the bass, somewhat.

I actually don't recommend these cases, I'm pretty disappointed in mine. My Jazz bass doesn't fit as well as I'd like it to (especially in a case made by Fender!) …and the big problem is that there is not enough room inside for a strap and a cable.

I sold Fenders for 10 years, and the case definitely fits both P's and J's...the way the foam is cut support either one very securely!

My molded Fender case is a very tight fit for my P. I couldn't fit a J in there.

I have a Jazz and a Precision. Both fit in my molded hard case. My jazz is an MIA Deluxe, but I think they'll all fit anyway.

They do. It's just a weird, tight fit. I called Fender to make sure that it would work before I ordered it and they told me it would. I was really disappointed when I got the thing. It's flimsy, made in China, and my MIM J wasn't happy about going in there. I should have ponied up the extra $30 for the SKB. They really should provide something better for you guys who spend a butt-load of cash on those MIA Deluxes.

I always thought they did, but I have one of each and no, they don't fit in the opposite case. Mine are the sort of instrument shaped ones rather than the rectangle ones. One is a good/solid case, the other is a piece o crap.

I have had 3 of the molded Fender cases over the past several months. I bought them used, so I don't know exactly which model they are - if they're the basic generic P/J case or were matched with a specific bass or model. They all looked pretty much the same.

I also have a '62 RI Jazz and '62 RI P.

Two of the cases fit both basses, and one of the cases fit just one of the basses (I think it was the P that fit, but I sold that case and don't remember for sure). Also, on the cases that fit both the P & J, my Stingrays fit in there as well. A stingray should fit in the same case as a P.

Mine is the shaped one too and it fits both AND it's crap. I think they do make some higher end cases that will only fit one or the other though.
