Does an overdrive tone sit better in a rock mix?

I listened to those three Iron Maiden youtube clips. The third one sounds more "overdriven" than the rest, but they seem clean to me 95% of the time, but not a punchy, snappy, bass heavy clean that I'm used to hearing. On some of the little bass runs he does higher up on the neck, it get's a nice little breakup, but I think that is just his tube amp doing it's thing, and not a pedal doing it. It sounds pretty natural. If that's what an SVT does, then maybe I need to go shopping! I like that sound, and I can see where it would sit in the mix of a lot of rock music.

And that is still "dirt." We're not talking about pedals, but about overdrive in general. Lots of it comes from an amp. Mine does. Lots of people like a tube amp just on the verge of break-up. That's an example of very mild overdrive/distortion.

I agree. Whenever I used to listen to the old Maiden albums, I thought of the classic "P-bass w/flats--> sligtly cranked tube amp" for THE tone.

I THINK( but don't KNOW) Harris used/uses a preamp based on the old hiwatt pre for live tone..assume he did the same in studio though I have never been able to learn the details of Martin Birch's technique for recording IM back n the early 80's...The p-bass tone on Piece of Mind is at the top of my faves...clearly audible in the mix, overdriven esp when he digs in...not distorted terribly...clean though...def tubey..To Tame A Land has awesome tone..you could imagine him diggin in on that one

A lot of these isolated tracks are coming from Guitar Hero and Rock Band. People are getting into the files for the software and extracting the isolated tracks, which came from the actual studio recordings. If you search YouTube you'll find tons of them.

I surrendered after the snes... just barely put my hands on the PS1... Oh well... Sold my snes to get my first bass, so obviously no regret !

hiho,glad you mentioned Martin Birch cause he did Roger Glover with Deep Purple and that was a cracking bass sound,listen to fireball.I think he was involved with Glen Hughes as well with Purple again a cracking sound.
Bruce Foxton with the Jam had great sounds but I would say that they have a fair amount of gain which could be amp driven maybe board driven or a combination of both.
Some of these players also used a cranked guitar amp as well to get the crunch/drive so now we,re movin into bi-amping,multiple channels and mixing signals.
I find using a pedal like a sansamp/hartke bass attack which double as di boxes work for me.The answer is yes overdrive once you get your voice is the way forward the trick is to find your voice and if you need a bit/loadsa drive then go for it.
