Does anyone do a 5-string Thunderbird better than Gibson?

I guess what I really want is a 5-string Bongo in a T-bird body so maybe I should be looking at a bongo. All the Gibby t-birds I've played have seemed a little dead sounding and the quality has been good, but not great for the money you're putting into it. Any suggestions here guys?

LeCompte immediately springs to mind. He has some incredible designs that aren't exact replicas of T-bird shapes, but are equally badass. His prices are comparable to a Gibson as well (I think). People like his 5-strings a lot, and you can pick what pickups and wood you want the thing made from down to the letter.

Yeah, Lecompte is a good idea. In fact, heres a T Bird on his sight. Not five, but he Im sure he could work that in.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but I'd consider the Spector REX models to be pretty much Thunderbird clones, and "muddy" is definitely not the way Spectors sound!
