Does anyone else have a hard time getting rid of gear?

And I can't count on both hands the amount of gear I've given to charity and Christian musicians!
Call me crazy or selfish but I find a kind of satisfaction in influencing other people's musical careers. It's cool to see someone playing your gear or using your style to further their own creativity
Seems as though if I like it, even a little, I keep it. If I don't like it, I usually let it go....even at a loss. Put it in the file as a bad buyer decision.
Sentimental value sinks its claws into my little blue heart without a trace of mercy. I stopped making any sincere attempt at learning guitar years ago, but keep my acoustic and electric around because they were gifts from my father and I can't bear to let them go. Likewise, my obsolete pedals, while entirely useless to me, stick around because I feel like I owe them respect for having carried me until I outgrew them.
The only instrument I ever sold was my 8th grade clarinet, which I hadn't taken out of my closet once in over a decade. I felt it deserved a second chance at being loved and appreciated, so I traded it to Sam Ash for an acoustic bass in hopes that some little band nerd would get more value out of it than I did.
The exception to all of this is my "technically first but I call a do-over" bass, a Rogue PJ I got with a Guitar Center gift card to assess whether or not bass was the right instrument for me. I've been trying to ditch it for years but pawn shops won't give me more than $20, churches and schools frankly deserve better instruments to practice on, and Guitar Center actually asked *me* to pay *them* to take it.
Getting rid of that ugly bass in a satisfying fashion has become one of my life's greater ambitions. Everything else I'll probably hoard forever.

I don't have the space to keep stuff for nostalgia's sake. Unfortunately, I can't even give stuff away in the local market for the same reason. Even pawn shops won't take it for consignment or otherwise.
Basses, amps, and cabs; no problem letting them go. Pedals I'm starting to hold ones I don't use on my current board "just in case I need it for another project." The only 2 pieces of gear I'm sentimental about are gifts from my wife and kids. My Hummingbird and my Les Paul...if I took the time to become better on guitar, they might see more use.
My last bass purchase set off a wave of selling. I wanted one really good unstrument, so I got rid of cheap stuff or unused stuff. I bought a 2011 American Standard P5. I sold a Squier VMJ5, Peavey Fury 6, Peavey Bandit amp, Fender 12-string acoustic, Fender 6-string acoustic, and 1996 American Standard Strat. I wasn't actively using any of it except the Squier. I came out ahead money-wise.
The Strat was a gift from my parents when I was 15. I lasted about 2 years on guitar before I accidentally discovered that I really like playing bass. I've been playing bass now for the last 20 years and the Strat sat, mostly for nostalgia and feeling like I had to keep it. My parents knew this, and I motioned that I sell it and buy the P-bass. They agreed. The two instruments even look the same: sunburst, tort, rosewood. I love having a quality instrument and I don't miss the stuff I never played.

Yes. I sell nothing. I actually did sell a heavily modded 74 P bass for $600 in 1996. Probably should have kept it.

I only get rid of gear when I see something else I want and will sell something off to Fund the new purchase. However things are kinda slow as I have two Basses up for sale and hardly any bites. I refuse to just give them away via way low price and may have to end up keeping them.
I've given away far more than I've ever sold. Partly because I don't get rid of many instruments. Everything bass I ever bought was carefully selected and purchased with the intent to play.
I haven't owned a lot of amps. I always got "the good stuff" and for the most part kept it. I've only tried to sell one amp I didn't really want anymore. And for what I was offered, I ended up keeping it.
Pedals and electronics are a sorta new thing for me. I'm definitely late to the pedal party. And I'm a little leery of buying them unless I have a specific need for something. Usually I sell locally what I don't want to keep - unless my GF (who's a guitarist) decides to claim it first. But I just put up my first classified listing for a pedal on TB yesterday, so we'll see how that goes. I don't do Amazon or Reverb if I'm selling.
I can't really say I've ever had trouble letting something go. I try not to get too attached to music gear. I have some favorites I'd hope to always have. But it wouldn't cause a huge amount of pain if I lost or had to part with any of them. I reserve any grief over loss that I experience for people and pets.

I find it tough to get rid of gear...I mean, I might need it again at some point or you know maybe just keep it as a backup. But yes. It's really hard. My drummer is REALLY bad at it...He has enough to gear to open a store.

Yep, my old Yamaha pb-1 and USA crown amp shall not be leaving my shelf, either to be used or sold, and I have no idea why, I'm just not selling it.
I haven't flipped anything in a very long time. I use my gear on a regular basis even stuff I own that doesn't see gig time I use in my music room.
I did a mega-shootout comparing my 12 basses, 6 heads, 4 combos, & 4 cabs. Did it over three days, & took detailed notes as I went along. I highly recommend it.
As a result I easily flipped 2 basses, 1 head & 1 cab (profit on the basses, loss on head/cab). I'm about to sell another head and a combo (both at losses). I've learned to see it as part of the running costs.

Yes, I always have had problems with gear that I think would sell in a heartbeat, but the small tiny things, like pedals and preamps goes like a flash, in spite of them costing way more. Especially amps are a hard sell. Pedals and basses you can bring with you pretty easy but large amps are a hard sell...
