Does anyone NOT use a compressor? (... and why not?)

Are people infatuated with just "challenging"? Going into polemics and replies, and diatribes just because of the recent politics debate of presidential campaigns? Contagious. Like "anything you say can be used against you!" ? It's either compressor for or against. Nothing "it depends"? Beats me.

I don't think it's any worse during political campaigns. It's just the nature of faceless internet interaction. People are more apt to write in an exaggerated way than they would speak face to face, especially with someone that they can "read" as having more complete information than they do on a given subject.

I have some specialized knowledge because of what I do for a living. The number of people who will argue with me forcefully, even to the point of rudeness and disrespect, regarding that specialized knowledge is exponentially higher on the Internet than in person. In a real world interaction it's much easier to gauge when the other person has more complete information than you. Online, not so much.
 
Yes, not only that. It seems that people in this thread, just thinks that you have to use a compressor pedal, in order to have compression. No one in this thread have so far discussed:

1. Inherent compression or limiting in any amp. Even in the tiniest combos they have put it in there, without notifying us. It's called speaker protection. Especially in low wattage amps.
2. Inherent compression in tube preamps, power tube amps, or other. Even SPEAKER compression, but that demands insanely loud levels.
3. Pickup characteristics. The more overwound and hot, the more compression it induces.
4. Active pickups or active basses. A 9v battery imposes a compression or at least limiting. I doubt few here can hear the subtle difference between the two. As fast as you have a low impedance line, it limits it somewhat. Maybe not as a listener but definitely it can be sensed as a player.

The question is, if people really KNOW that they have compression in their sound anyway, but thinks they have not?

If you combine all points above, what's the point of adding another comp pedal on top?

Possibly nobody has mentioned the inherent compression characteristics of a tube amp because that's so well known by now as to hardly be worth mentioning?

In fairness, I also don't think there's a theme in this thread that is saying you must have an outbord compressor in order to get compression in your signal.

But the OP was asking about compressors more as a device. If we were to get into a discussion about every single factor that brings something akin to compression into play - along with all the related "yes buts" for each - it would never end. :)

I'm astounded with how many players here who are wearing their ignorance on their sleeves and don't seem to understand one of the most basic production aspects of their chosen craft.
There are still a bunch of people who completely misunderstand how compression enhances your dynamics. Here's a simple explanation.

Let's say you have a bass. Volume wise it goes from (an arbitrarily chosen) 1 to 20. It basically has a dynamic range of 20. Let's say your general playing volume with a normal attack is 10, but with a soft attack you can go to 1 consistently. With digging in you can get a consistent 20.

Now let's say you're playing a song and it benefits from a nice softly played bass passage so you go to playing at 1. Your volume has now dropped to a small fraction of your regular playing. Your band still drones on. You're now unheard by the crowd. Even if it were the case that the rest of the band drops to 1 with you, now the crowd cand hardly hear the entire band. Everyone hates you.

Alternatively there's an awesome chorus. You go up to 20. Your gitarist now can't hear himself play and wants you to die. Or if everyone goes to 20 the crowd goes deaf. You just destroyed your fanbase and there's sadness all around.

In comes the compressor. It's set to keep your sound from staying between 5 and 15. Now all of a sudden your soft passages can be heard in the mix. Sure they're softer, but only about half so. And if you turn up the attack you are about half as much as loud. The guitarist will allow you to live for now.

Dynamics are enhanced because you can use every single bit of your dynamic technique. You can play from 1 to 20 but still be heard. In comparison without a compressor you'd be limited to staying within 5-15 yourself, thus not being allowed to coax every possible sound out of your instrument that it's capable of. The enhancement of dynamics is in their usability, not their range.

I think you described this in very realistic and practical terms. If a singer has compression on his or her voice and they reach a passage in the song where they whisper, compression isn't going to change the fact that they are whispering. That's going to be obvious to anyone listening. But it's going to make the whispering audible.

That's because, as I wrote before, understanding compression is *tricky*. It takes more time, patience, and work to understand and use than pretty much any other effect, and the end result is ideally so subtle as to go unnoticed. I'm not surprised that a lot of the responses here are in the "compressors are a crutch/flatten all dynamics/sound like garbage" vein, because there is just a lot of bad/incorrect info out there, based in part on musician's tendency to throw out the manual and twiddle knobs in a futile attempt to get a good sound happening.

I share your frustration, however. Compression, really great sounding, judicious compression, is on more classic hit records and used in more live venues than not. It's relied on by countless session pros with nearly flawless chops and audio engineers with extensive resumes. But somehow, random dude on the Internet is "above" it because "it's a crutch". Uh huh.
 
This thread has actually gotten me thinking more about compression than I ever have. I think a lot of guys don't think twice about it as an effect because typically it's not overly dramatic like a distortion pedal. I'm going to listen a little more carefully to what my bass is doing with what amp. I'm sure I'm overlooking an area that can be improved.
 
I used a couple before, but decided against it for my situation. I play almost solely at church, where we have dedicated audio techs for FOH, monitors, and our live broadcast. All of which run capable boards that have built in compression, and they almost always are using it already so no need for me to double conpress at any stage. I've done it before like I said, and it didn't sound right.
 
To me, it depends on the compressor. I hated my Barbershop Accountant, so I fired him. But my new White Horse by VFE makes my bass sound so fat and muscular, I find the sound without it lifeless in comparison. I don't use it in extreme ways, and yes I can still tell it is a slight "crutch," but at the end of the day it makes my playing sound more glued into the mix so I don't care that it is aiding me technique-wise. I've seen plenty of players with amazing technique that are completely devoid of musicality and soul, so I don't get involved in worrying about technique anyway.
 
Funny how the "compressor is a crutch" argument is very similar in many ways to some of those old upright players who liked to argue that using an electric bass, or even putting a pickup or mic on an upright bass, was a 'crutch' as well.

Ah you're right, but not exactly. It's the very fact that it's compressing and reducing dynamics that is enhancing the output in your example. Reducing the volume difference between loud and quiet so that it is all heard.

All those who have magic fingers must also play with utterly perfect musicians who are also in control of their own dynamics. Which explains why I've never found them - they're all already taken!

So, how can a compressor which bring quite passage and way too loud passage to more audible/manageable level isn't killing dynamics ? Dynamics is the hability to play as a whisper and then scream and everything in between ... just like in classical music or early jazz music.

But you agree that if you use a compressor to even things out and then on the recording they compress it again, you end up having a playing without any nuances, monotone, without any inflection like a humain voice, pretty much a robot always on the same note, same velocity etc

That is the fallacy right there. Who says it has to be compressed to the point of being flat and lifeless? If that's how the compression is being used it's using compression incorrectly, full stop.

Yes, the signal gets squashed, but without it, the super soft passage wouldn't even be heard at all – that's the point. So physically, yes, the signal is "squashed", but perceptually people actually get to hear all the soft nuances of your playing AND if you've set your compression correctly the soft stuff will still be quieter in volume than the loud stuff, and the super loud stuff will be attenuated enough to stop clipping your pre-amp and still SOUND LOUD.

So, do you want to play true dynamics whereby 90% of the audience does NOT hear your beautiful symphonic like barrage of harmonics and ghost notes because you refuse to use a small amount of compression?

The whole point is to connect and communicate with people, how can you do that if your audience doesn't HEAR what you have to SAY?

That's ^ what I was trying to say in my first post in the thread, people missed my point, I tried to bring it home again above; but you've managed to succeed, I think, where I failed to get this point across.

... However with your above statment that can still be done with a compression pedal.
I play with some very dynamic drummers and one of the guys I play with switches from light Indian percussion to full kit, in the same set. My MXR M87 is on the whole time. I can change my hand technique and Im able to match him with no issue.

I'm not challenging You and I'm just stating for edecutional reasons to other players it can be done.
This was my situation when I just opened for Stu Hamm at NAMM and I had no issue.

When I first read the OP, I was amazed that someone who uses compression could establish what is basically a troll thread, even if unintentionally. Only the OP knows for sure if it was intended or not as such.

For the most part, the trolls and the misinformed have left the thread, and what I see now is the Pastors preaching to the choir.

Alas... No amount of logic nor education found within this thread is going to change someone's ears when they've got ear-plugs in and aren't willing to listen.

Cool. I'm going to once again pimp the MXR M87 Bass Compressor, especially for those new to compression or dissatisfied with previous attempts. If you read the manual (ha!) it explains very clearly how to use the invaluable LED meter to set it up. This is a HUGE help, since setting a compressor by ear is an ability that can take a fair amount of time to develop, and no doubt the reason many have had difficulty doing so in the past.

To the OP; Stringthrough: Hope we can keep this thread alive... You return back in 2-3 years, and say the same thing. Would make a bet that the listening fatigue has crept in on you. You said you use it on all of the time. Bet that by that time, you'll turn it off now and then. In 5 years you've got rid of it or traded it out for something else. Other brand though. But nuff of that. We can't detect. You may say so in a post here anyway, since now you know.

I reckon you meant "synonym", not "thesaurus". A thesaurus is where you go to find synonyms. And boredom.

Also, though this is no doubt old info for many here, it bears repeating that Bongomania's compressor FAQ and reviews are MUST READS for anyone interested in compression. Seriously. The guy has done a ton of work and made available a library of accessible, easy to understand information for anyone to access, and that's a wonderful thing.
