Does church music pay?

I have never made any money playing in a church. In some ways that was a good thing. We had people of all ages and skill levels playing music together. In the church I played we were there becuase we enjoyed playing music. We had a good time.

A lot of places function on volunteers, or have some extent of volunteering. My experience has been that really small or really traditional churches pay (and pay well), medium sized churches don't, and really large ones do (not always so well).

Are you asking if you can expect payment from this church that you're playing at? That's something you'd want to ask them, because it can vary. But being payed to play at church has been a very stable income for me for the past decade or so.

The thing I found was the "really traditional" are paying for the in high demand and rare traditional pipe organist. But not for the modern pop combo. Unless that local body in being fair opens up for other instrumentalist. The payment goes for the staff member. It is the medium sized who see moving to the next level up where money starts getting spent on the likes of us to get a better pro to transfer rather than depending upon the existing member volunteers.

Depends on the church. I had a gig at a Lutheran church for a few years. One practice and one service a week. I was paid $100/week for this. Wasn't bad, but the services were 2 hours or more. It really was a drag as I am not a church person. Plus I was playing in my cover band at the time too so there were times when I would get home at like 3am and then would have to wake up at 7am for service the next morning... there were times I was still drunk in church.
