Does everyone have an "always on?"

I am not a huge effects guy, but I have ran through a RAT in some bands. I love some chorus and reverb as well in a fusion/jazz band. I have ran through a Sansamp many times, but for the most part, I am a huge fan of a killer tone created with barely any effects..I dont even EQ that much.

Interestingly though this weekend I saw Dave Larue setting up his pedal board. That thing was a monster I should have asked him what kind of board it was. It was basically 3-4 feet wide and all digital. It basically has all these buttons you hit for different settings. I would personally go insane due to the overwhelming amount of options, but it looked cool.

One setting was a harmonizer I think he tuned to 4ths..it also had some other effects mixed into it. It was just a crazy tone. Basically you just build the tones you want and assign them to different buttons.

My only "always-on" is a BBE Sonic Stomp, and that's only on when I'm at my main gig, where I go direct with no amp at all. Sonic Stomp into my Radial J48 di is as close to "simulating" an amped signal as I have heard, I love what it does. Gives the sound guy a great signal to work with.
I don't use the Stomp at any gig where I actually have an amp though (seems kinda redundant to me, although I know some people do it)
All my other pedals are just for fun effects and other craziness!
Although if I let myself be, I could totally be a "slight wooly overdrive" always-on guy. I try to save my pork loin for when it really matters, although I LOVE a warm, hairy, tube od tone

I used to run a bass compressor, an EQ, sonic stomp and a drive pedal, but then I got a Meas Bass Buster Tube Amp and only use an Exotic RC Booster to boost the signal into overdrive when needed. I have noted that with that amp, less is actually more.

Electronics effecting my tone that are always on: my bass, the active pickups, my amp and it's pre-amp. Oh, you meant add-ons that always on - nope, but lots of effects I turn on/off a lot like chorus, flanger, distortion, wah, tremelo, synth. Some compression through an entire song on occasion.

I don't expect this thread to reveal any great knowledge but it is interesting to see the approaches different peeps are taking to their tone.

I agree with those that say practice with the effect on if you are going to play with it on, since that is the end result sound you want. Practice without effects will keep you grounded in what your instrument can do when it comes down to just you, your ax and a basic amp - good to stay in practice with that, it will come down to that on occasion.:bassist: I've seen way too many guitarists who can't play without a lot of effects on - they can't relate to their own basic tone.

Sans Amp Bass DI, always on...

I also have never in almost 20 years used a compressor, I've been toying with the idea of trying one, but I don't think I "need" it, my tone is fairly bright, with a decent low end thump. I just want to see if it will enhance and "hone' my tone. I don't slap & pop with the style I play, so it wouldn't be for that at all.
