Yea, I kinda understand you.Most people are just simpletons who want to swing their arms around with sticks and say that their in a band.Then of course theres those egocentrics who want to be in a band and play guitar so they can get the dist. sound that their fav. bands sound like.It takes someone with more intellect and a hint more maturity to REALLY play bass.
The bass is such a powerful,broadranged,sexy,moving instrument.I know what its like to be one of those people who I described earlier.The first time I ever strung a bass for my self,I said "man, this guitar sucks.The strings sound the same,its so boring".Once I gave it some practice,and learned a little,It tottaly changed me.Bieng a bassist/musician just kinda...makes you better.You guys know what I mean.

I do know what you mean. Bass changed my life... not trying to sound overly dramatic or cheesy here, but it did make me more mature and changed my interests and tastes. I truely think bass is a very very powerful thing in this regard, and I agree with the frustration expressed on this thread about people (band members and non-band members alike) not really getting that. I think we bassists have a little bit of an obligation to help teach this. It isn't an easy thing to communicate, but lets face it, not many people have the specialized knowledge we have learned. Hope none of that came out pompous or arrogant.

I can see that there are some positions in this discussion that are pretty apathetic to showing these newbies what the bass is all about... if they dont care why should you right? Just my humble little opinion, but maybe you could take one potential bassist out of this group you are all dealing with and turn them serious. Maybe you could get it into their head they dont need to be the guy on the back of the stage who no one really hears. But on the other hand-it sounds to me like there isn't much potential out of the ones you are dealing with. Hmm... just a wee little thought.
