Double Bass Does Northwest Airlines take basses over 70lbs?

Like it says, does anyone know for sure, preferably from first hand expirience, if Norhtwest Airlines takes basses over 70lbs? Their policies are not written very clearly, and noone I've gotten on the phone can tell me with certainty if they do or not. Their policies say no bags over 70lbs, but a seperate policy states that they take cellos and basses. My bass is well over 70lbs in every case I've tried. It's 99lbs in a gage case. So, anyone know for sure? Thank in advance,

Northwest is the most consistent airline that I have had experience with.

I have never had trouble carrying my bass on. Their limit has been bumped up to 150 pounds (says the clerk at LGA, it might be worth a check).

My bass has missed a connection or two, but their baggage delivery service is pretty awesome. They treat the bass well and have gotten it to me on time, which was good of them.


I pretty much fly them exclusively these days. USAir is a joke. Southwest destroyed my Juzek when I went to ISB. Continental refused me service with my bass. British Airways is way to expensive. Virgin Atlantic/ America are supposed to be okay with basses, but haven't tried them yet. A buddy with a cello said they treated him pretty well though. Delta used to be awful, haven't tried them recently. I just don't like taking chances, and I always know what to expect with Northwest.
