Does price = quality/sound

You are right that these (well some examples of them) are quality basses.

However to argue everyone would be better off playing them and they would sound as good as other basses is plain stupidity. So Stanley Clarke would sound as good on a Precision? Oh of course he would..........

P and J basses have their limitations. Just look at Marcus Miller - he modified his in a big way to make it fit his requirements.

Well, interesting argument you put forth, but if you are claiming that is what I said, - that is not what I said. You can draw your own conclusions, but you can also leave out words like "stupid" - not necessary at all for a discussion.

Apologies if you thought I was calling you stupid - however I wasn't - I was referring to the notion.

And apologies for feeling I may have singled your point out - I see a lot of people saying roughly what you've said and it is patently wrong.

These basses may be suitable for your playing and listening needs but for some types of music and players they are merely adequate or worse.

The bass people choose is down to issues like playability (for them), weight (some people prefer heavy basses for tonal reasons), the way the instrument supports their playing style and ability to make their music - affordability (for them) yes there is a certain amount of brand blindness, following the herd, loyalty or even snobbery - but these are all reasons why there are so many different types types of instrument available.

But to say any bass outside of the four you mentioned are in some ways covered by those four instruments is quite wrong and really quite disrespectful to the designers and players of subsequent bass models - many of these people are virtuoso musicians - so they are all wrong eh..........and have wasted their time and money?

"I see a lot of people saying roughly what you've said and it is patently wrong." - so you are saying I am wrong. But I didn't give you anything to pass judgement on - just an observation that I have made. Again, I didn't claim that the 4 I mentioned meet all needs - never said anything like that.
