What works for me is to think about how the song is supposed to sound and just do what it takes to produce that. Make it sound and feel right. If you stop and try to concentrate on the individual components, you're dead meat.

I sing leads and backups and play a lot of fretless. but I've been at it a long time.

I admire those that can. Especially bass players. I can get through a few bars, but eventually, I either end up playing the note I'm singing or singing the note I'm playing.
