Does This Pickup Seem Like Anything Other than a Music Man?

I sold this on Reverb and everyone was happy as a clam but now this goombah claims this is not an original MM pickup.

Frankly, I've had "a few" Stingrays and - well, you tell me.

He's calling me names and going to report me to the CIA and so on.

Fun times.

He says he saw this exact bass in a "Jonney Long" demo (I don't know who that is) and it had a Kent Armstrong in it and so now, even though the bass sounds great and is what it's supposed to be, he's calling me a liar, which I do not enjoy all that much.

Yeah, I though perhaps he'd seen one with a Basslines or some other after-maraft pickup.
I guess he doesn't realize a 10-second Yahoo search can show him a thing or two.

what kind of preamp is in there?

Well, "I" figured it was the normal preamp although those are piezos in the bridge, thus the extra knobbage. Now I think it's a Nordstrand pickup. I missed the "N" in the corner. I THINK.

Debatable. There's no excuse for the buyer to be rude, but it does seem like some dissatisfaction is understandable if the aftermarket pickup wasn't originally disclosed.

I have 4 fender precisions an 2 have Nordstrand pickups in them an thinking about a 3rd nothing wrong there....an i bet its the piezo, he's hearing an dont know how to use it...

I don't think the piezo is the issue.

Your buyer was probably expecting a ‘normal’ MM Stingray

Probably has no idea about the Piezo MM Stingray model.

Probably wants usual EBMM pups.

Even though this is a step up IMO it probably should have been made known

some people want no mods. If it has Nordys on it its a mod. Granted Nordys are great, but...


Plus I don’t see an ‘N’ in the lower right hand (treble side) corner of the pup.

If there's an N on the pickup, then it's probably a Nordstrand. If it is, then it's no longer exactly that bass.

MM is very protective of their pickups, and I've heard won't sell a replacement without having an original shipped back. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but stock MM pickups mean a great deal to many. It's not the same as with some other popular manufacturers where the proper pickup is easy to acquire.

Does he mean Jonny Lang?

Kent Armstrong's MM pickup has no polepieces, or at least no exposed polepieces.

I'm not seeing the Nordstrand N.

Show the headstock, bridge, and neck pocket. Then remove the pup and display front to back. Then sand the headstock and apply a Fender precision decal.
