Does this sound too wooly?

It’s sounds great BUT it’s a woolly sound for sure.

My suggestion would be to take the dry line out of the Sansamp (which I think it’s best feature ), and run that line to an AGuliar AG preamp, for a true clean tone. Then you can blend the two to taste.

Sounds fine to me as is, but it's not really worth critiquing the sound all that much without hearing how it sounds with the rest of the instrumentation.

Sounds fine to me if you want the bass to be a cushion and not in your face. I’ve certainly heard plenty of records with that sort of sound.

It will get lost in the mix when you start adding guitars and piano. If you want it to be "the bass track you hear when it stops playing", it's a great tone; if you want it to be somewhat present in the mix, it could use more high mids content.

It sounds good like that. If you can manage to be heard once the other instruments are added, then I think it should be okay.

Back when recording engineers wore white lab coats the producer might hear that bass tone and shout for “10 at 10” , ie 10 db at 10k.

I also like it just fine but suspect it may sound a little too dark in a mix.

Too wooly? No. I like it. But - on iPad speakers - I'd like a few ms faster attack and slightly less compressed attack. Rolling back a SansAmp's blend may take you in that direction.

I just checked, there is nothing at 10k, nothing at all. When recording a SansAmp output, the sound is pretty much baked in as far as I know.

Since the majority of those who responded didn't find the sound too offensive, I'm gonna go ahead and send the full track to my piano playing friend without fear of her going "Bleh! what the(insert your cursory expletive of choice) is this poopie?"

Of course not! Lots of consoles had a shelving high so that shelf could be boosting much further down. We are deeply spoiled with tons of EQ options.

Remember, white coats, ashtray on console etc....
