Dogal Carbon steel rounds

I have messaged Strings by mail about Dogal strings CS90C Carbonsteel round wound, round core. I asked if the roundwound was actually more flat like the rotosound 77 flats or mid or very round. No answer. And how they compare to the Thomastic powerbass round set(which are considerably more$) Anybody have any info on these CS90C? Tension, life, brightness etc?

I ordered both Dogal rounds:
Dogal CS90C CarbonSteel Round Wound Round Core Bass Strings 45-105, 34 scale AND the Dogal NickelSteel RW160C Round Wound Bass Guitar Strings 45-105
Putting these on both P basses. If anyone is interested in a review, check back here in a couple weeks.

Yes, I am in Texas. I ordered a bunch of picks and the Dogal CarbonSteel Jaco flats from them no problem. The Carbonsteels are great, so I wanted to see, If they consistantly make decent strings, etc..

as it turns out, strings-by-mail doesn't carry some of the sets that are available in europe (i use the lighter gauges), so i may be SOL on this brand for the time being. but i'm always up for trying a light gauge, round core round wound just to compare to my old stand-bys (rotos or TI jazz rounds).

@JRA Im a long time TI JR and Nickel-on-roundcore set player, give the Dogal Hellborg sets a try. They are a real contender when you put them up against TI JRs. They are very supple and great 'in the hand' like the TIJRs and have little more ring in the high end than the TIs, but still not harsh like SS or hexcore strings.

Biggest problem is the cost puts you right back up there with TI *shrug*

Yes, the Dogal Carbonsteel flats are about $70 too. Alot like the T.I. jazz flats, but tension is just a little firmer. I am looking to string up my two P basses for Punk n Mod rock, so my basic, initial question was, are the Dogal Carbonsteel rounds more flat that alot of rounds, etc. Anyway, I bought both the NickelSteel and Carbonsteel rounds to see how round they actually are and how they perform. I usually like flats, but my Rotosound 77 jazz flats are great for rock and they are not glassy flats at all. Thanks. Yea, I read about the Hellborgs, but that is not the type of string I would want to use for Old skool punk, imo.

hey, thanks, karl! i'd love to try them, especially now, with that endorsement/experience.

maybe i should see if strings-by-mail or another domestic supplier can get me one of the really light gauge sets. i'm used to the TI pricing, so i'm not flinching at that aspect.

edit: looks like i'd want the CS90 and/or the CS90A in 34" scale.

I've used the Dogal Jaco flats (40-100) and currently have a set of Dogal Nickel rounds (40-100) on my '88 Fender MIJ Jazz. The Jaco flats were very bright at first, which I liked, but after a couple of months I switched to the nickel rounds. After 13 months, they're still on the Jazz and haven't lost much of their wonderful character. Strings by Mail had this particular set (RW106B) on special sale for $23.99 (US) then and so I took a chance on them. I will definitely order another set in the future.

I look forward to your report on the Carbonsteel rounds.

@JRA SBM is great, and the only US distributor for Dogal (at least since last year when I started using the Hellborgs—ironically in a search for a cheaper TIJR but fell in love with them!) I only saw the Hellborg in one standard gauge, but heads-up on the SBM site Dogal has LowB AND HighC sets so scan the gauges per string to make sure. (they should really label it better.)

@Pyrrho Epoche Sorry can't help with the finish of those sets. Is maybe what you're describing is the 'grippiness' of the wrap? I use to play nothing but DR about 20yrs ago, but always hated the wraps—very grippy on the hand. Is this what you're asking? For me DR, ROTO, and a few other Brands have an 'aggressive' outer wrap. I can say that if Hellborgs are any indication of Dogal wraps, they're possibly 'smoother' than other sets. I thought they were similar to (but not quite as smooth as) TIJR.

Though, I can say after my experience with the Hellborg sets, Im very interested in trying their other offerings—like the Jaco and Nickel sets. I'd be curious to hear how the Dogal Nickels (or Steels) sound/feel.

BTW, Dogal is one of Italy's major string makers since 1950s so Im as confident in their manufacturing as GHS, D'addario, or other major Brand here in the US, or Rotosound in the UK. Hope that helps.

Karl, yes the grippiness. I dislike rounds unless they are smoother. I just have this association with rounds being standard on anything coming out of a factory. The Roto 77 Jazz flats are about as round as I like to go(and for a flat, they are not smooth at all, but great for punchy punk) I have not tried the T.I. Jazz rounds or the T.I. Powrbass sets either---they are on my shopping list.

yeah , the TI Powerbass or Alloy might give you the sound/feel you're after. (at least bigger than the TI JR)
The hellborgs were definitely smooth than most round wounds ive played, while probably not what you're looking for, hopefully an indication of the Dogal style of wrap.

I agree. My methodology is; I am probably going to really like the T.I. powerbass sets and I read they are not a super grippy round, yes. But, If the Dogal rounds are on par with T.I. for half the price, then I can take the TI Powrbass set off of my shopping list.

Have you looked into GHS? their Pressurewound series is great in the hand—whether it fits your preferred gauge and sound... YMMV

Not GHS, not yet. Are they the one where the silk wraps ride on the saddle or too little silk for the tuner? I think I wanted to try them..

I haven't had that issue with GHS on either of my basses ('74 Fender Jazz or G&L L2500) Maybe double check your mensure?
You can always try adding a spacer, or (for steel strings only) use a lighter to quickly burn off the excess. (Ive done the spacer trick on several basses for taper)

That is a good suggestion. I think I have the GHS in my cart still. I have been so blown away by the Dogal Jaco carbon flat set--they were so perfect in every way--did not have to trim them or anything. I will play them for like 3 min, put the bass down and just stare at them in awe, at how amazing they sound. That is why, I want to try their other stuff.
