Dogal Carbon steel rounds

a follow up:

i emailed SBM and was told that my light gauge prefs would be a special order and would take 6-7 weeks to get to me. the price quoted was $45 per set.

i'm going to try one or both sets (CS90, CS90A) just see what i've been missing!

Update:
Three days now with the Nickelsteels. 45-105's. They sound great, the only thing that I do not like is, burning my fingers on fast slides. They are still rather round. I opened the Carbonsteeles too, and they are the same. I ordered some T.I. Powerbass yesterday. If anybody wants the Dogals let me know. $32 a set and I will pay shipping if it is not too much or too far. The Nickels, I did not snip at all before installing and the Carbons are still in the box.

Second update:
Well, I have been playing on these Dogal Nickelsteels all evening and they are growing on me. The tension is perfect and they ring nicely. They are not too grippy at all and they just sound so good. I am upgrading the pups on this Squier P this coming Friday, so looking forward to that. I sanded the laquer neck with 1000gr wet s.p, and as you would guess, it is super smooth now. I will probably install the Carbonsteels on my PJ in a day or two...maybe, I will update you all soon about them.

Update on the Dogal Carbonsteel rounds:

Ok, so I installed them on my Lim. Ed. P/J Fender Jaguar a few days ago. I really like the feel. The tension is a little tighter than the Thomastik flats. They are a little less grippy than the Dogal Nickelsteels and sound a little more defined than the Nickelsteels. For $40 I am keeping them on--well worth the price. Compared to the Roto 77 Jazz flats, the Carbonsteels and Nickelsteels are a tab bit grippier, less tension, growlier and more sustain. The resonance and brightness between individual strings is better than the Roto flats also.

The Flat Carbonsteels on my Jazz bass are #1. If you want a string like the Thomastik flat with just a shade more tension, the Carbon flats are insanely perfect.

Anyway, I also installed the Thomastik powerbass rounds on my 2nd P bass and they are really nice too. Bright, articulate, super growling lows and moderate tension.

Ok, quick update. When I got home, I played all three;
Dogal Carbonsteel.
Dogal Nickelsteel.
and Powerbass strings.

The Powerbass and Carbonsteels sound and feel very similar. The tension on the Dogal carbons is a bit tighter. The Thomastiks are a shade less grippy but clang/flop off of the frets. They both sound great but I do have the player fender pickups on those basses. The nickelsteels sound kinda flat/way more grippy, compared to the other two, but the Squier pickups are getting replaced Friday. Maybe the strings will improve after the pup swap. As for the life/longevity of all the strings, we shall see.

After using TI Jazz Flats exclusively for a few decades, I just put a set of Dogal Hellborg strings one my Lakland five-string fretless.
I haven't played them at volume yet, and I am curious to hear them amplified to see if the low B and E buzz like bees. After the grandchildren have gone out for a walk, I'll plug in and give them a more extensive listen.

Here's what the invoice said I bought:
Dogal JH1715S Hellborg Stranded Core Bass Strings 35-120, 5-String 35" Scale (JH1715S 35)

I didn't notice anything to indicate whether these strings were carbon, nickle, kryponite, or unobtaniom, but I am happy with them so far. Guess it's time to invest in something I use plug my bass into while listening on headphones - too many napping grandchildren for a full test - yet.

First impression after half-an-hour at practice volume: too many bees buzzing, especially annoying on the B-string. It sounds like I'm badly in need of a fret job, but I put them on a fretless.

It's not to the point that my tinnitus has me screaming for mercy, but I'm hearing far too many annoying overtones, and far too little purity of pitch, compared to TI flats. It's not that the notes played are out-of-tune; what I am hearing is like trying to listening to an electric bass being played in a Pachinko parlor; I have to strain to hear the fundamental amid abundant background noise. It sounds rather like someone has punked me by plugging my bass into chorus and distortion pedals without telling me.

I'll give it a while, but I think I may have burned a hundred dollar bill for no reason other than to learn a harsh lesson rather expensively.

we've been in the moving process for a couple of months and i haven't always had the luxury of picking up an ax anytime, at any moment, but: i received 3 different sets of dogal strings (for 4 bangers) and have actually strung up one set --- the dogal hellborg stranded core set (JH171 34" scale).

at this point, i doubt if i've played them as much as @Jazzdogg, but i'm having a nice experience with them so far. i like the clarity i'm getting (fretless) and i especially like the feel/compliance/'loose' thing.

i put them on one ax more or less at random and they have improved the experience on that ax (it had light-gauge roto 66s). i'm fine with the overall sound at this point. but it's the feel i like. i could change my mind with more hours of experience, but i'd rate them slightly below my current TI JR experience (~10 years) ATM.

i think two things might be true of my string experiences = 1. i'm not that picky, and 2. almost any string sounds better on a fretless! i'm not shocked by the price, but it's just too early for me to know whether i'd ever buy them again.

also, in the same shipment, i got a set of each of the dogal carbonsteels: CS90 and CS90A. unfortunately, i haven't been able to string them up on an ax and check them out because of the moving --- but i will! --- and i'll get back with an impression.

another observation:

i used the dogal hellborg set on a passive ax (PJ pickups, VBTT controls) and for whatever reason the tone controls and the blend control have come alive --- they're a lot more responsive to their relative positions --- the blend control function seems much improved with these strings!

not sure what that's all about, but i thought i'd post my experience. so far dogal hellborg "stranded core" strings = good!
