Yup, we just put our dog down because he had cancer, and he was deathly afraid of fireworks. Of course, we just happen to live in one of the most white trash area's of the city so people are lighting off firecrackers and such almost all year long. It really pisses me off.

Dogs and fireworks

The lab used to get a bad case of anxiety . I never heard of giving a dog benadryl , I should remember that.
my cats are scared of the vacuum cleaner..one of my dogs is scared of the cats...
I had a Sheltie that we took to the fireworks one year, and he hid under the chairs shaking so that was the last time we took him!

Yup .... they're safe for dogs (my vet even likes the idea), plus it's much cheaper than the anti-anxiety pills you get from the vet.
One pill does pretty well for our Dobie and Irish Setter .... if the level of anxiety is bad, try two pills (still safe, but I wouldn't go any higher for a large breed dog).
We'll even give our Irish Setter one when his allergies are acting up.
Ever read Marley and Me by John Grogan? It's actually coming out in theaters on Christmas. It's about the Golden Lab that he had for about 13 years. The dog would get so bad during thunderstorms that they had to give him a prescription to practically knock him out if they knew one was coming. If they didn't he would destroy the house, especially if they weren't home out of fear.
Well Benadryl took off the edge. We put her in the bathroom with music and it got her through the worst of it. She shook like a leaf. She'll sleep a lot today. Thanks for all the suggestions.
We had a female shepherd who HATED fireworks. Would shake and pant, pace and try to get under the bed - behind the toilet -- anywhere to get away.
The vet gave us a low dose doggie downers that would let her sleep peacefully through the night.
Unfortunately we lived in a large metro area and fireworks would be going off a week before the holiday and a couple of days after. It was hell for her.
Not so bad now that we're hicks.
The males we've had don't seem to mind the noise as much. Our 3 yr old female isn't scared of 'em, but she doesn't like 'em much. We just try and keep calm so that she won't get stirred up. Laugh when they go off and let her know she's secure. We play claassical on the radio and pet her a lot.
I always wonder what the hell ppl could be thinking when they take there dogs to firework shows.
Poor things cowering and shaking. I want shake 'em and go "Wake up!"
