Doing covers and getting individual tracks??

I'm sure you all have seen the Youtube videos where a musician does a cover of a song and is able to remove the instrument from the original song, so they can put their recorded track over it.

I would like to know either:

a) How they remove certain instruments (not likely at all)

or

b) How and where they get the raw tracks

My best guess would be to say that they are getting the raw tracks from somewhere, but I haven't had any luck finding information about this ANYWHERE.

Can someone help?

I'm not sure, but I've heard many people get the raw tracks from Rock band or guitar hero, I have no idea how they manage to get them though, sorry I can't help any more. It's impossible to just remove a certain instrument from the mix if all you have is a finished mix (and nobody except the studio owner and probably the band have the recording session)

Rock band/guitar hero is one possibility. People rip the songs from the game disc somehow, I don't know how that works, but sometimes tracks are released with certain instruments missing (like this: ) almost specifically because people doing youtube covers is free publicity.

Outside that, you can hide bass a little easier than some other instruments. I've done a few youtube videos myself and I've found that a high pass filter at 500hz at least makes the original bass quiet enough that you can be heard.
