hi, i'm currently doing up my first bass as i have alot of spare time at the moment and thought it would be fun, anyway its a really cheapo p - bass style bass. was wondering if it was worth replacing the pots etc and what pick ups would be best to go for if i wanted to get that kinda old p-bass sound? Also would it be worth getting a badass II bridge to put on it?

yes on the bridge, ...maybe on the pots, its up to you.
for pickups, that's a very personal topic, but I hear the fender pickups should give you the sound you're looking for.

ahh aye i'm not sure if they'll get the sound i want exactly though because i kinda want the old p-bass sound but with more punchy mids. does changing the bridge really affect the sound that much?
Bridge sonic effects is a can o' worms argument around here. I like big heavy bridges.
Pickups, read the comparo threads stickied at the top of the forum. However, my univrsal first experiment option is the Dimarzio P. As cheap and as common as dirt on ebay, and been made since Moses was in nappies.
Pot. Replace them if they're faulty, otherwise don't bother. Experimenting with a different tone cap value sometimes is worthwhile for some people. Caps are cheap.

ahh thanks might try out the dimarzio p i looked at the stickied thread but it was all J pick ups etc so didn't bother and thanks for the input! think i might change the pots as they crackle quite a bit.
Assuming it feels good, it is worth doing.
Strings and action/intonation/pick-up height first.
If that doesn't do it then it has to be pick-ups. While doing that replace the wiring, pots and shielding.
Voila, new bass.
I shouldn't worry about the bridge until you've tried the above.
