I finally took the plunge and slapped on a set of Dominant orchs last week, replacing my Obli/Superflex set.

I gotta say, the first couple of days took me back to my Spirocore days, but now that they're settling in, I'm enjoying the--how shall I say?--more "testosteronic" sound. Also, the arco response is soo-poib.

One thing that concerns me: the thread of the E string comes down past the nut. Should I be more worried about breakage that if it didn't?

Mike, I would say the answer is YES . Previously in this thread from Kevin / Connolly & Co. / Thomastik:

...When the strings are at pitch on the bass, where is the silk on the peg-end? Is it right on or just barely clearing the nut? Does it wrap around the peg enough to where any steel is touching the peg? I ask because breakage can occur if there’s metal wrapped on the peg or if too much of the silk is on the nut.

Mission Accomplished

Eliza at Connolly air-mailed my new Dom E .... got it yesterday ... installed last night .... playing today. This time I added some extra felt washers to the ball-end to get the silk junction well away from the peg (about 1" now), smoothed the nut and bridge grooves a bit with a fine file (not sure they really needed it but I was superstitious ), and lubed grooves with a tad of pure silicone grease and graphite powder. Thanks again to the fine folks at Connolly.

I've had the Doms on for one week. These are the best jazz strings I've had on the bass. I don't need to repeat what everyone else has said about their power and strong fundamental. Doms are popular with violin, viola and cello players. I'm surprised that strings with that pedigree end up being great jazz strings.

I haven't found the tension or stiffness to be a problem. It doesn't surprise me that people have used the solo gauge with success as their stiffness allows them to be tuned down without the normal falsing headaches.

Arco is kind of mixed bag. I find the D and A a little strident under the bow -YRMV. I've played a lot of single string scales on the D and A hoping they would mellow,...nothing yet. Still, the strings are very bowable overall and I don't mind the ringiness in exchange for the pizz volume.
