Don't understand this 'suggestion' from the Ampeg website:

I can generate a sine of 50hz @ one volt RMS and play it just fine. What are you guys smoking?

Voltage rises to 1.4v and falls to -1.4v sinusoidally at 50hz. The speaker pushes out and pulls back. That's a lot more than 2 bits of info in 1 second. It's lol audible.

In PCM (digital coding frequency modulated transfer) it means nothing but just "1"

I wonder what's so interesting to try to argue against Shanon's theorem of Entropy that is base of many modern science disciplines. Mr. Shanon was employed by Bell Laboratories. His foundations strongly improved engineering of telecommunication and broadcasting systems.

explain why my different brand mixed cabs have a slight blurriness that biamping takes away. I believe it is a slight difference in ''phase response'' but you may call it group delay.
Besides deviations in group delay a more likely issue that may hurt the sound in a slight blurriness way is different filter Q of the ported cabs.
This may happen if cab A is tuned at the north while cab B is tuned at the south of sensible tuning range.
The paramters of the loaded drivers in combination with cab specification relate into a distinct fourth order filter frequency response with different slopes and different step response (damping), and also group delay.
Noticeable different step response leads to some none linear distortion for the total sound that can't be EQ'd.

Most obvious deviation noticable for both cabs if (re)modelled with WinISD very likely was phase, but it's not the answer to explain slight blurriness, while different damping and group delay could explain those artefacts.

Or you may do the math for the fourth order filters to see what's really going on under the hood.
A simple comparison of Bessel versus Tschebyscheff (or Cauer) filter alignment likely shows more of truth what might happen than any pure phase consideration.
With some skills it's even possible to roughly read filter characteristic from the response curve shown at WinISD modellings.
Knowing one or two things about filter characteristics then it's even possible to roughly assess damping

As a steady sine transports no information the brain has no possibility to read information from something that is clearly audible.
The brain tries to read information from anything that is audible but in this case totally fails. That's the reason why tinnitus suffering people run into big psychic problems if the tone noticed is to loud.
If I remember correctly steady sine tone was sometimes used to torture people.

Right, had just same idea on my side with some truth to the point.
If the brain can't read sensible information from the "noise" than it's a torture.
While independent of prefered music style (or cultural circle) any brain comes to same conclusion there is no information avalable with a steady sine.

Ampeg marketing department goals,
the aim is to get as much profit as possible.
As there was likely more profit to sell any mixed combination possible the marketing department should better promote the mixing of sealed with ported cabs.
Any company should promote this option cause it will improve profit.
Marketing department folks must be idiots for not doing it.

Right.
Based on filter theory by which a cabinet actually is represented in mathematical way.
Sound issues in decreasing order
None linear distortion
- damping based on filter Q respectively filter characteristic alignment
- group delay
Linear distortion
- response
- phase


Theres is couple of another possible none linear distortions caused by partial membrane resonance at mid/high frequencies but, has nothing to do with phase.


Just to answer a question (to everybody) before the question is asked,
the answer is 42,
why phase to come last in order,
it's clear a 180 degree phase shift would terminate the signal to zero.
That's what generic folks might think about mixing
Within a cab family like MI ported cabs this will never happen. Mixing of ported with sealed was missing the point.
Science folks may claim that even little deviation in phase explains bad sound, see order above.

Many manufacturers do it.

A whole lot of insights and opinions here in this thread, but as far as I could see only one post of someone who actually uses the AMPEG suggested cabinet combination - and he says it sounds great (see post 82). As far as I'm concerned that counts more more than all of the theoretical arguments.
