Dont use craigslist if you think everyone's a scammer

I've done a few very successful transactions on CL (buying and selling), and also had my share of kooks, scammers and ********. It's just a microcosm of the real world. What pisses me off are those who list an item, and never reply to legitimate questions. It is what it is, I guess.

LOL

This is funny to me. I'm trying to sell a Rick copy on CL right now. I get a TON of weird replies. Check this out...this guys probably not a scammer, but sounds like a crackhead...

he responds to my post:
$400.00 they have them at tommy guitar on the west side what you what for it

so i write:
You should probably scoop one of those up for 400 then. I'm looking to fetch a little more for mine, not in a pinch to sell so I will hang onto it until I find the right buyer.
Thanks!

and he responds:
it not foe me i have a real rick i was tell you that if you ran across someone that low on cash that way i ask you how much your were trying to sell your for not foe me a friend

LOL WUT? :hmm::confused::eyebrow:

My response would go like this, "Fee fi foe fee foe?"

At any rate. I have found four words that are like kryptonite to scammers,(Local cash sale only). I included those four magical words in every add I have posted recently, and not one scammer/spam email.

I do not buy on CL, period. I only reluctantly sell on my local CL, items like amps that are too big and heavy to ship economically. I have found that emails from CL are about 95% fails and scammers, so in my ads, I always put a blurb like this: "Cash + local buyers + face to face only. Call me at XXX-XXXX between 4 PM and 11 PM for arrangements." The serious buyers will actually call me instead of emailing me, while the email scammers mostly leave me alone. I have successfully sold two amps this way.

There's a guy in my area that showed up on my Craigslist notifications as selling a bass and I've tried contacting him about buying the bass. After I send him you standard "I saw this bass and I'm interested" message, this is the response I get.

"Dude, if you're gonna ****ing scam me, at least make it look real."

I'm a tad flabbergasted by this response so tell him I'm not trying to scam him or anything.

"Yeah right, I'm really trying to sell this bass and you ****ing scammers are clogging up my inbox. I'm forwarding your e-mails to my spam folder."

Moral: Don't use CL if you're paranoid that everyone's a scammer.

Send him an email exactly so "Is this item still available?"

If you are feeling like typing, make up the story that you are working and can't email now but you will contact him later to buy the bass and that you will send a money order for 2000 more than the bass and he can just wire you the difference.

As a frequent CL poster, I will say this:

1) >75% of the emails I get are spammers.
Some aren't even trying. They just have something posted like "of chicken soup" in the body.
Others are sent 15 seconds after I post, "Is the item still available?" Uh... yeah. It is.

2) Spammers copy and paste your anonymous link and put you on a list
I never had much spam until I did CL and now, apparently, the spammers think I have a dinky wang.

3) Real people who read and respond to my ads are great!

I put in my ads, something along the lines of "If you are a human being and not a spambot, email me" and sure enough, had a guy respond, title was "Human being interested in your case".

4) Anyone complaining that the lister isn't responding to them shouldn't have put something that sounds like a spam attempt

How hard is it to ask a lister "Hey, do you still have that brown Jazz bass?" as opposed to "Still have it?"
I just delete responses that are so vague that I don't know what I'm getting.

Also, as a note, spammers are including phone numbers as well now. Sometimes a full number, sometimes just 7 digits, but they are banking on an emailed response so that you can be added to the dinky wang mailing list.

Send them a pic proving them wrong.
