but hey, I kid Toad The Wet Sprocket. Not my thing but they're still doing way better than I am, although the two touring guys they work with probably only do a little better

OK I have to step here on this one. Not only am I a TOAD fan, but I consider them kindred spirits. Like them, I'm a child of the 70s and 80s, from a SoCal beach community. We wore shorts growing up, everyday. Period.
Now, I get the whole professional thing. Really. If I were in a truly professional situation I would likely rarely wear shorts when I play. I'm not, so I don't really care.
HOWEVER, genre, styles, time and place, context, are all important. It is totally normal for me to see TOAD wearing shorts. In fact, I recently saw them and it seemed like Dean and Todd were both over dressed with pants on, as far as I'm concerned. Their music is about authenticity and intimacy. They are almost ridiculously unpretentious as a band. Dark colors and pants (typical rock) almost seem out of place and pretentious.
But again, this is coming from a gen-Xer, ex-Californian. Shorts are just normal to me.
