Good point.
I suppose oil doesn't really have a very obvious purpose, but it acts as a thermo-regulator for the earth. Pretty cool really.

The methane hydrates get trapped at a certain pressure but if the sea level drops because of a cooling earth (ie glaciation), this pressure is released and the methane is released into the atmosphere causing global warming, and releasing the earth from a glaciation.

If the methane is never released, it gets trapped under sediments and becomes converted to gas and oil that we use.
Then CO2 is released at volcano's during subduction.

This cycle keeps the earth at a fairly constant temperature, (suitable for life to exist).

Patently absurd. While eruptions may occur, there is no credible evidence that the Permian extinction was cause by a methane eruption. The assertion that such an event is imminent has no more credibility that the 2012 apocalypse.

Methane clathrate, or methane ice, does exist under oceanic sediments. Geologists are trying to figure out ways to extract it for use as fuel.

So by us extracting the Earth's regulator, are we not raising the Earth's temperature? From what I understand its a fragile balance that allows use to live on Earth. So to me that means something like what the article is claiming is feasible. :confused::confused:

It is when the carbon locked up in the oil is released as a gas (methane or CO2), as in when we burn it, that the gas in the atmosphere can absorb and store more of the suns heat.

So if we release more of these gasses it will cause global warming. But this is something the earth is well used to and in a large scale can deal with it. Its a different story for animals and people however.

So by doing this we are affecting the earths natural balance, causing premature global warming, possibly?? We could be due for it anyway seeing as we are in a minor glaciation at the moment.

When dinosaurs where around the atmospheric CO2 was something like 1000 to 2000 parts per million. Today it is closer to 350ppm.

There is a lot of misinformation going on in this thread. Plate tectonics are not lubricated by oil. There was once a time when there was little oil on this planet. Note the word fossil fuel (ancient life turned to fuel). There was plate movement before life.

Unless someone can back it up with a source. I have never heard of oil being a lubricant for tectonics.

Yea, your right. Its amazing how many people have immediately decided they know whats going to happen, even though they probably have no idea what factors are controlling the situation.

Its a pity that we really only have two unreliable sources for this information; the massive company (BP) whose agenda is to increase money, power and influence; and paranoid and possibly fear mongering conspiracy theorists.
Immediately incites biased opinions.

Am I the only one who is really really curious about what Kanye West's take on this whole thing is? BP's got a massive oil leak going on and the Permian extinction was the biggest extinction EVER! EVER! Where is he when you really need him? :ninja:

I concur. But the off-topic comment? Really? Oil is made over a long period of time when heat and pressure are applied to the blood that seeps into the Earth from all of Chuck Norris' victims. Didn't they teach you that in high school?

As for the article and the subject in hand, who knows?

Better yet, who cares?

If it happens like they predict, it'll be a relatively painless death for majority of us, PITA for about a year for only about 5-10% of earths population. It's not like we are going to live forever (here) anyway You know.

If it doesn't happen, they can tell that we dodged the bullet this time, but we can count on them to collect enough "evidence" to support their theories to demand a few billions to "preventive measures".
