Doomsday Theory

I hope I have time to open up a beer before I'm instantly killed. I guess I'll have to drink fast.

Seriously... someone will always come up with a doomsday scenario.. y2k, 2012, etc. Hell the flagellents were walking around Europe beating the hell out of themselves as the year 1000 approached. Screaming "the sky is falling" always gets more attention than just stating the known facts.

Besides, the aliens will intervene and save us.

IIRC, the physical state of an element doesn't rely only on temperature, but also on pression. The high pressure must have something to do with the methane's solid state.
Well, you're right about the pressure. I think it would have to be pretty astronomically high to make methane a solid at the sort of temperatures you'd find in that region, though. I'l see if I can find a phase diagram.

Methane, btw, isn't an element.
