so:

permanent band member doesn't respond in good time to a gig offer

said permanent band member eventually commits to the gig

after committing to the gig, said permanent band member backs out of gig

band finds out through social media that said permanent band member broke committment in order to sub for another band

band auditions sub for said permanent band member who broke his committment

said permanent band member loses his religion because the band's looking for a sub because he is subbing for another band after committing to a gig and then backing out for said gig

No, you weren't obligated to tell the dude you were auditioning subs. And it was a huge D move to back out of a gig you committed to in order to sub for another band.
Most def. a deal breaker and a terminal offence. Dude made his choice.
