BTW - I also believe that the reverse configuration is the better placement, as it gives more bottom to the lighter strings.

Meh. I've tried reverse and don't like it. Yeah, the tone is arguably more even from string to string...
...but it's devoid of "P-ness" IMHO. :hiding:

But seriously: the beauty of the standard P-bass is that the top strings "sing" more, and you get more thump down low.

I've never played one but sonically, what would be the difference between a standard double P and a modern stingray with double H pickups or the old sabres?

Essentially the same as the difference between a P-bass and a Stingray. It's the P-bass split-coil humbucking pickup versus the MM double-coil humbucker. The P coils are wired in series for thicker tone, the MM coils wired in parallel for more top and bottom.

Some Rays (fivers, anyway) can be toggled from parallel to series, but they still don't clone the P tone.

I have the Fender Blacktop Jazz...nice Jazz body, gorgeous white chrome pearl finish, and powerful double P pickups.. love it!

I love my Blacktop jazz as well. The double Ps on this thing are just so aggressive and huge. I wish more people rally knew about the blacktop series, it seems they have gone under the radar for the past two years. Probably one of the most versatile sounds you will ever get, plus, the White Chrome Pearl color is AMAZING!!!
